Online vs Weekend TEFL Course - Which One is for You?

When you want to experience the different side of teaching in a way that will enrich your knowledge and experience with regards to people from different cultural backgrounds, color and race, learning how to teach English as a foreign language is probably the way to go.

While you may be well-equipped in your area of expertise, teaching the English language to students that are not as well-versed as the average English speaking person could be a great challenge. Your best bet is to learn TEFL before taking on the huge responsibility of training students to speak, read, and write English as best as they could.

Online TEFL Courses

Today’s technologically-advanced environment enables us to learn and even earn a degree without actually going to a traditional school. The same is true with a TEFL course. You may choose to learn online in the comforts of your own home or office.

An online TEFL course will also enable you to learn at your own pace, stretching the course for a period as long as six months or as short as 14 weeks. You will have your own online tutor and may be provided with audio-video materials to help you with your pronunciations, especially perfecting the American twang which most foreign students and schools prefer when they want to learn conversing in the English vernacular.

The downside is that you will not have the opportunity to do an actual teaching demonstration in a real classroom setup.

Weekend TEFL Course

If you want to be in a real classroom setup and learn from an actual teacher but don’t have the luxury of time, you may still choose to learn TEFL but only on weekends, from 20 to 60 hours, depending on your choice and availability.

Some aspiring TEFL teachers opt for this weekend course because they want to have the actual feel of a classroom setup, and they also want to take advantage of the opportunity to conduct practice teaching to actual students instead of via the webcam on the internet.

The live interaction also provides them with the just the right amount of confidence and sense of timing, preparing them for the day when they will be conducting classes themselves.

To Summarise

Whichever course you decide to enroll in, whether online or not, the bottom line is that learning TEFL could be your ticket around the world. While travel opportunities abound for a TEFL tutor, the compensation and benefits are not lacking either.

A TEFL Certification Course without observed teaching practice is a waste of money - but the guy who wrote this will delete my comments . . .

Why would I delete this? We are all open to opinions. A TEFL course is better than no TEFL course at all. If a teacher doesn't have the time or money to attend a classroom based TEFL course, then an online course would be the next best thing.
