11+ Exam 1947

My education. I first went to School in January 1941. The primary School was good, the Junior School was good.

I failed the 11+ exam and my twin brother passed which did not go down too well at home. The question was why did I  not pass. I went to the same school, I had the same lessons, I was also in the A stream (they used stream classes back then).  So why why why??? My parents could not understand why I had not passed. My mother particularly must have had a short memory.
We will now go back to the day of the exam.
The exam was in two parts,  session one in the morning  session two after lunch(which at that time was called dinner).
I thought that I had done OK in the morning session which was maths (which I am still good at)and various other subjects which I was OK at.
Then we went home for 'lunch' .
You may have gathered if you have read so far that I am pretty laid back. I might complain a bit but really it does not matter.
When I got home my mother asked me how I got on, me, in my laid back way said " well I've got two chances, I've either passed or I have not ", . All of a sudden things started to fly. I was standing by the front door and my mother was in the kitchen throwing anything she could lay her hands on at me. Cups, saucers, plates, and various other items.

I got no 'dinner/lunch'. I ran out and went straight back to school. The afternoon session exams were about things like fitting round pegs into square holes and those sort of questions. Besides not being very good at abstract things, at that time, and besides worrying about, was I going to be allowed to go home that night, I don't think I did very well that afternoon.
I never knew until that time that my mother had such a 'short fuse'. The same sort of thing happened a couple of times after that incident but that's another tale.
When I did get home later that day the 'air' was very cool, my mother would not speak to me.
I could not understand at that time what I had done. Later in life when I got to know my mother a bit better I found out. That day it was as if she was doing the exam, she was worried stiff for us boys. Us boys were not worried at all.
