Gourmet Food - Finding Affordable Ones

Gourmet Food Basics

Although the basic rule for preparing good food is always the same which is to choose the best and the freshest ingredients then cook them until they have the best taste, texture and color. There is a difference between good food and gourmet food. Often when we talk about gourmet food we are unclear on the "gourmet" concept, we need to try to define what we mean by gourmet food. Although it is possible to find various definitions for gourmet food, perhaps the best way to describe gourmet food is to say that it is food that is superior be it in cooking style, simplicity, taste, smells, wonderful looks and uses the freshest and best ingredients available.

Cooking gourmet food entails using fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh meats and sea foods, fresh herbs and spices which are of unquestionable quality. If there is an unavailability of the freshest ingredients there may be a need to compromise and use freshly frozen meats and dried herbs and spices, but even with this there us a need to look for the best quality possible. Gourmet food emphasizes concentration on quality instead of quantity. The food should be cooked to perfection which is just long enough to maximize the flavors but not to long as to ruin the taste. Different dishes demand different cooking time. To achieve the most perfect taste possible when cooking a particular food requires not only experience and skill but also an inborn knack and natural talent. Most people can cook but to be a gourmet cook one has to be special, a part of the small elite that produces innovative culinary masterpieces.

Gourmet Food - Beyond Tastes

Gourmet food must not only taste good but must also look good, we enjoy food through our senses, primarily, taste, smell and sight. Like a beauty pageant there must be beauty to go with the brain. Food that is presented with flair and not just "bunged on the plate" will be more appealing to the palate. An interestingly arranged meal so which looks interesting will pique the guest mind and provide a topic of conversation, which will add to the enjoyment of the meal. A few freshly chopped herbs can create wonders and add both color and taste to food. For example putting some freshly chopped chives, parsley or coriander in the bowl before serving the soup in the bowl, gives that added flavor, looks good and smells great. When serving meats such as a roast , slicing pieces of meat and placing these slices on the plate rather than serving one whole piece will lend the meal an air of professionalism and also makes the meat easier to cut and eat. Make sure to serve hot meals hot as a lukewarm meal would no doubt invite a similar lukewarm reception from diners.

The advent of many modern shipping and food preserving technologies have made it easier to prepare gourmet meals. There are many fresh exotic delicacies, fresh fruits and vegetables available at the local grocer, the simplest foods can be made into a feast. There's nothing more enjoyable than a good dinner no matter how small or how grand the occasion. Many of us don't have the time to prepare gourmet standard meals every day, but you should try to create a gourmet meal once in a while for a change. The meal will be a special treat for you and your guests and will be a great benefit to your soul and taste buds. As it is such a great delicacy in itself, why not give your loved ones a gift of love by preparing gourmet foods in the form of gift baskets to be presented on those special occasions. Your gift will be loved and cherished for it provides both health benefits as well as gifting pleasures.

Benefits of Gourmet Food

When you think about it, the immediate benefits of gourmet food becomes readily apparent. Gourmet food is made from the best ingredients and prepared lovingly with attention to detail. Thus this particular food is healthier in most aspects when compared to other foods. There is a saying that you are what you eat. This saying is rooted in the basic truth that if you treat your boy well you will be healthy. Gourmet meals are some of the healthiest food available whether store bought or home made. Also in terms of mental health and skill making a gourmet meal will also give you more satisfaction and increase your cooking skills. They taste better to boot.

Gourmet cooking takes more effort as one has to shop for fresh ingredients, and then go home to prepare them, but the taste you achieve is well worth the effort. A tip when using fresh ingredients is to check the recipe to see how much preparation time is involved and how many different ingredients are used. If you choose simple recipes that have only a few and simple ingredients, you will find that it is a lot less taxing. Stick to the original recipe unless you are a world class chef, make sure you have all the right ingredients and follow the instructions carefully. To achieve the desired flavor and appearance is impossible for the layman if you do not use the required ingredients. Taking shortcuts to cooking is impossible unless you have an intricate knowledge of cooking such as possessed by an experienced chef. The freshness and quality of condiments such as butter and olive oils are important too as they will compliment good meat and fish stock or bouillon. When making stock from scratch it is important that you simmer the stock and use raw vegetables such as onion, carrot, celery, bay leaf and pepper corns to enhance the flavors to make an excellent basic stock.

The hallmark of a good meal is instant taste bud recognizability, the diners should not have to guess what they are eating; they should instantly be able to identify and enjoy the flavors and tastes of the meal. Although it is best to use fresh ingredients this is of course not always possible for the layman, thus its ok to use a tin of tomatoes or tinned tomato. Although we would all like to be a Martha Stewart some shortcuts, such as frozen crust and puff pastries provide a most welcome aide, especially if you are not a practiced pastry chef or short of preparation time. Our modern freezing procedures and packaging have greatly improved and the quality of preserved items are almost on par with their fresh counterparts.
