What is the best multiplayer fps ever?

This is a question that many gamers have asked over the years, and this is a question that no one can answer. There is a simple reason for this, everybody has their own opinion, everyone likes different things, some people say that counter strike source is rubbish; others say it's the best thing since sliced bread. Just because IGN or some other online magazine claim to be the 'daddy of online gaming mags' and they say that 'x' is the best game ever doesn't necessary mean that it's true.

There are many claims to the throne of 'the best online shooter ever' these include the original, doom, quake and also wolfenstien 3d to name but three. But what does make a good shooter? Graphics? Gameplay? Atmosphere? Longetivity? To be a good first person shooter one of the things that is essential is a quality multiplayer. This is why unfortunately, in my opinion, the three games I have just listed are not going to be crowned champions.

The reason for this? It’s quite simple, how many times can you play the same game? The same enemies?  With the same poor A.I? Ok, I understand that mods are released all the time for many many games, not just first person shooters; I admit that they do help keep the content fresh. But the real longetivity for games comes from its multiplayer capabilities

To determine how successful a first person shooter is going to be, you need to look at its multiplayer. There are still many older shooters that are performing well online. A quick look over at clanbase.com shows you just how popular the original counter strike still is in Finland, this is a game that’s been out well over a decade and it's still extremely popular. many old games are still popular, the original call of duty still has a huge following online, compare that to say crisis, the cutting edge game from  a year or so ago that whilst having some of the finest graphics seen to date, it was left wanting in the multiplayer department.

in fact if you look at some of the online statistics many older games are holding up well, it's only really been cod 4 that has taken quite a few players from other games, but is that because of the game itself or because the graphics in the other games were becoming a little stale?

But what does make a good online shooter? There are many different types of games, from run and gun classics like quake 3 arenas to the slower paced tactical shooters. Are team games better than single player 'free for all’s?'

I could go on all night comparing this game to that game, how I wish that if a certain game had a certain element it would make it the daddy of shooters hands down. But this is all about opinions, and hers mine!

In my opinion, the greatest multiplayer first person shooter of all time is...drum roll please.....

Wolfenstein enemy territory, if you haven't heard of it, then today is your lucky day. It's the 3rd in the series of wolfenstien games, coming after wolfenstien 3D and return to castle wolfenstein, which itself was both excellent in single player and multiplayer, and is what enemy territory is based on.

Enemy territory (ET for short) is a team based shooter set in ww2. And when I say team based, I mean team based. Without good teamwork in ET your team won't get anywhere, you need a mixture of the 6 classes to have any chance of winning a round. And that’s the beauty of it; you really do need to work as a team.

The graphics might not be cutting edge; the sound might not be either. But the gameplay? The gameplay is spot on! Who cares about realism? No online shooters are realistic, maybe one day when bullets actually come flying out of the screen they could then be classed as realistic, but until that point none of them are!

Oh and one more thing, ET is free.yup, that’s right, it's free. Always has been always will be. All you need is a connection to the net and away you go no lost cd keys or anything!

Ok, so threes my opinion, sorry if you don't agree, but hey if we all agreed then there would be no need for war....hey wait a minute..!

Lastly sorry if I didn't mention your favourite game, I know I left out many many games, but I’m too busy having fun on ET to care!
