Where do we start? There have been so many celebrity scandals over the last decade that it is nigh impossible to begin. Immediately a glut of names flood my brain- Hugh Grant, Britney, Michael Jackson and of course, good old George Michael who can always be relied on time and time again to cause us celeb watchers to suck in our cheeks, shake our heads and tut “Well, I never.” So strictly speaking this decade begin in 1999, so Hugh Grant’s indiscretion with 50 dollar whore Divine Brown in 1995 shouldn’t really count, but he was the guy who seemed to kick it all off. His being caught by a cops torchlight as Miss Brown ahem pleasured him in a car did no harm to his career and former hooker Divine is now a millionairess as a result. A couple of years later George Michael, another global superstar had a run in with the LA Cops as he exposed himself in a toilet to one fortunate guy working undercover. In 1998 George was caught prowling round Hampstead Heath, London a notorious homosexual meeting place. In 2005 he was caught slumped behind his wheel in the middle of the road under the influence of marijuana. Just last month while drunk, his Range Rover spun out of control and hit another vehicle. Amazingly he has only been cautioned and never charged but the real scandal with Michael was when was the last time he had a hit? Now, someone who is still hitting the headlines is Michael Jackson, despite his death in June this year. Although it seems that he is now clear of any guilt in child molestation, the furore it caused in 2002 when one minor, Jordy Chandler accused him of paedophilia was enormous. The King of Pop was a huge superstar whose image was caring, kind and gentle to others, especially children who he attracted like a magnet. To his fans this was just unbelievable. To his critics it confirmed that he was really not just a weirdo but a pervert whose wealth and status he used to lure children. It didn’t help that Michael eventually paid of the Chandler family £20 million dollars as to many it confirmed his “guilt.” However, Michael had his day in court in 2005 when another allegation of child molestation made by minor Gavin Arviso he was refuted. His career, at least until his death, did not recover however. The damage was done and some may argue that it was this that led to the other scandal involving Mr Jackson- his addiction to dangerous painkillers and the ease of which he was able to obtain them. LA, huh? It seems to be the hub of all scandals. The female of the species being no exception. In 2007 Britney Spears had a very public meltdown when she shaved off her hair at a cheap LA hairdressers in full view of the paps and then went berserk with a brolly when estranged hubby Kevin Federalize refused her access to her kids. Previously she had married childhood sweetheart Jason in a hasty LA wedding. It was annulled the day after. She had been photographed driving with her young son Sean Preston on her lap. Then was the disastrous VMA awards performance when a bloated and dazed Spears mimed hopelessly to her hit song Gimme More. It took her being sectioned and Kevin Federline having custody of the children, for Spears to turn her career and life around. And she does not hang out with Paris Hilton any longer. Or Lindsay Lohan which leads to me to the next scandals of the decade.
