An old 'V' series poster...

'V' is finally back. I knew of V when I was still in grade school. I saw this 'V' paperback at a mall (Kimball Plaza, Gensan city, Philippines - now burned to the ground. Ahahahahahaha!!!) when I wnt with my Mom to get some groceries. The cover, a big red bloody 'V' sign, intrigued me so much that I just had to buy the book. After several weeks of wheedling money from my parents and the death of a catty bank (it wasn't a pig), I finally got just enough pesos to buy the 200PHP book. Now 200PHP for a kid was fortune in those days.

I really liked the simple plot of the book... far less complicated than Battlestar Galactica (where boomer was guy), StarBlazers, Startrek and of course Starwars. It opened a lot of possible stories and endless daydreams. Ahahahahaha!!! So the old plot was... Alien studies Earth from afar, Alien comes to major cities, Aliens posing as friends, Aliens kidnap people for food, some cool guys find out, resistance starts... and so on and so forth. Sometimes you don't need complicated plots to come up with good stories.

So I ended up buying all the V books I could find. The Money? I told me dad it was going to be my book report for the entire year. I guess he knew what I was upto but just wanted me read. I think the last book I read was the fifth column introducing a viral dust into the mothership with the help of a fifth column of aliens. the dust killed the lizards but no the humans. No. I think the last book was about that secret lab constructed by Dianna in a swamp in north America. Hmmm... Twas so long ago.

I never heard that there was a tv series for the book until I was in college. Even then, the VHS for the series was so hard to find. The internet was only for universities. There was simply no way I could get my hands on a copy. So for years I was never able to see it.

Then the internet came. At 100PHP per hour, twas the cheapest. But for downloading it wasn't that practical. So me and some other guys who got hooked on the massive information the internet provided created small scripts that enabled computers in internet cafe's download the anything in the background.

So we selected the files to download and then leave it. Only to come back to copy it slowly using 1.44md floppies (usb drives were still far into the future). It took two weeks to download the first season of the original 'V' series. But it was worth the wait.

Oh yeah... lizards...
Oh yeah... lizards...

Now we have a brand new 'V' series. For what its worth, I think its of to a great start. Although I am not comfortable with the acting but its tolerable. The plot of the story compensates for almost everything. The master villain now is Anna instead of Dianna. Ann is portrayed by Morena Baccarin (one of the stars in Sci-Fi series Firefly and its movie Serenity). Morena's acting here is really good that it makes the others look bland. Oh.. back to the plot... ahahahahahaha!!! They kind of twisted it a little bit to match with the current world affairs. At least I see some similarity to it. I don't really care it it reflects to the poilitical atmosphere of some country as long as blasting aliens is part of the story. Ahahahahaha!!!

did you know that the original series was succesfull for the first season but its ratings plummeted down because of severa budget cuts. They even resorted into using too much stock footage that it diluted it so much that it was discontinued without really closing the story. The new 'V' sereis now clearly has lots of budget but unless they improved the acting it might just go the same way.

I still can't compare it with the new Battlestar Galactica (BSG - where Boomer now is a lady and the cylons are hot chicks). I kind of use BSG and Stargate and some books of Frank Herbert to guage the 'awesomeness' of a tv or movie show. But that's just me.

So before you curse me on writing this hub... Why not consider buying the original 'V' series I listed below.

Trust me. You might just like it. :-) (And forgive me for the RSS below... just testing the waters... Ahahahahahaha!!!)

A Little Interview

Was it right to revive the sci-fi "V" Series?

  • Yep. It should have a better adaptation of the book by now.
  • Nope. It should have stayed in the closet. Forever.

Same here. I have the original in VHS, roflol. I hope this remake is as good as the old. I found it strange the new leader was Anna n asked out loud, Wasn't her name Dianna? hmm...well, time will tell. Great topic! :)
