What are the challenges of homeschooling?

Before you ever embark upon your homeschooling journey, you should know that it is not going to be without challenges. While there are going to be unique challenges that every family will go through, some of the most common challenges include:

1.Burn out. This is something that the parent who is primarily responsible for homeschooling the children is at risk of facing. For this reason, it is important for this parent to schedule time for themselves to be nurtured and renewed. It is also important that this parent get some private time each day. Whenever possible, this parent should utilize the resources that are available within the community. Another thing that this parent should do is develop a strong, personal support network.

2.Adult social isolation. Whenever a parent spends the entire day and night with their children it can lead them to experience a sense of social isolation. This is why it is important to get involved with your local homeschool group. Herein you can find a lot of the adult social interaction that you need.

3.Financial burden. Not only does the parent have to live on 1 income so that the 1 parent can stay homeschool the children, the family also has to pay for both educational materials and extracurricular activities for their children. Depending upon what the family chooses to use or do, these expenses can be very costly. You need to understand that purchasing packaged curriculum is expensive. Thankfully there are a lot of free materials both online and at your local library. These things can prove to be an invaluable source. Also, if your child has special needs, then more than likely you will have to provide both the services and the equipment that your child needs. Of course, you will also have to pay for any extracurricular activities that your child wants to participate in. Depending upon what type of activity you and your child agree for him to participate in, this can also be quite expensive. This is because you may have to purchase special equipment or uniforms. And remember that all of these things, plus your normal household expenses must be paid for by one income as one parent will be staying home to homeschool the child.

4.The possibility of legal consequences. While the legal risks of homeschooling are quite minimal, you should still make sure that you are prepared to take the risk and pay for any legal fees that are associated with the risk that you are taking. This is especially true if you are going to be homeschooling a child who has special needs. Therefore, you really do take the time to research all of your state's laws and policies that apply to homeschooling. This should be done before you ever begin to homeschool your child. If your child is currently attending a public or private school, leave him there until you know what the laws and policies in your state are. You do not want to get off on the wrong foot.

Even with these challenges, homeschooling can be a real blessing to both you and your child. This is true, even if your child has special needs.
