Feileadh Mor

The Scottish Kilt

The Kilt

The kilt is the national dress of Scotland, there are 2 types of kilt, the Feileadh Mor also known as Geat Kilt or the Breacan Feile, and the more common Feileadh Beg.

The Feileadh Mor is just one length of double width tartan, usually 6-7 yds in length which is gathered into pleats and belted round the waist.

The Feileadh Beag is a hand or machine sewn kilt which is worn just above the hip and fastened by buckles. this is the most common kilt.

The wearing of the Kilt in Scotland dates back to at least 1594 which is the earliest documented in a description of a corps who came to the assistance of an Irish troup under attack.

(Interesting fact) it takes 7 yards of wool to make a kilt but a whole length of wool is 9 yards a man asking for wool for a kilt rather than cut off 2 yards would ask for" the whole 9 yards" a famous saying these days

These days the kilt is mainly worn for formal occasions, weddings, funerals, and of course they are worn at events like the highland games.

Below is a comedy song that was number one in the uk charts for about 3 weeks called donald where's yer troosers(trousers).

have fun.....jimmy

Great Hub, Jimmy. I never gave a thought to what the expression "the whole 9 yards meant", and now I know. I can't wait to impress my friends with this new bit of trivia. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas.
