dont call a tech
I was called today by a gentleman asking me to take a look at his computer because it would not power up (switch on) so off I went to his house to have a look.
It turned out that his wife was on the computer last night and after she had shut it down she had switched it off at the power socket and all I had to do was flick the switch back on. I do have a minimum call out charge but I didn't have the heart to charge him for it which I think is also good business sense because if anything does go wrong with his pc he will call me again.
Things often do go wrong with computers but about one third of my call outs could be avoided and money could be saved if you just follow some simple steps.
STEPS TO TAKE WHEN YOUR PC WON'T START
- 1) Check the wall socket is turned on.
- 2) If using an extension cord try a different 1 (extension cords can malfunction too)
- 3) Check the power cable for breaks.
- 4) Check the fuse.
- 5) Check the plug is wired properly.
- 6) Try a different socket.
- 7) Try a different power cable.
If all that fails there is a possibility that the P.S.U (power supply unit) inside your pc has blown.
Then it is time to call out a technician.
These simple steps could save you some money and time always look for the obvious first a lot of the time that is the problem.....jimmy|

Great hub! This is apparently still a common problem. Early in my career I called a tech for repair when the office computer failed to start and, when he came, he looked behind the computer, put the plug back into the socket a the computer started working. I thought this was just my dumb mistake until I was reviewing some books recently to use in training new techs and the first item on the troubleshooting checklists in each of the books was "check to verify PC is plugged into electric power".
That sounds all to familiar. I brought my mouse back to the store where I had bought my computer as it didn't seem to scroll any more. They cleaned it right before my eyes and it worked perfectly again. I must have done some snacking behind the PC and rubbed some greace on the mouse accidently. Wow I felt stupid.
