The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife is easily one of my favorite books. I would like to discuss why I think you should, if you haven't already, give it a chance, and maybe even consider watching the upcoming August premiere of the film.

The first time I read this book was about a year ago. I was hanging around some poetry chatrooms when I decided it was time to expand my horizons as far as literature goes. I politely sent out a message to anyone who would be so kind as to suggest any good books for me to read. Needless to say I ended up with quite the list. (Perhaps I will post that as well...) I was more than excited to get started on researching the synopsis for all the wonderful suggestions I was given. One of them being, of course, The Time Traveler's Wife.

Now you have to understand, the book is about a man with a genetic defect of sorts, that causes him to jump through time, without his permission or even his control. At first I wasn't too sure of what I was getting myself into, but decided to give it ago anyways. To some this premise may seem unappealing, even a little far fetched, but we all know never to judge a book simply by its cover.

Diving a little deeper now, our protagonist, Henry DeTamble, arrives one day in an open field belonging to the family of a young girl named, Claire Abshire. Henry reveals his secret to the girl, realizing how well he will know her in the future. She of course does not believe him until he disappears right before her eyes on his way back to his own time. But before he goes back he asked Claire to keep a journal of dates and special events when she sees him, that way he will always know where and when he has been.

I don't want to give to much away, but its safe to say that Claire and Henry fall in love with one another and are seemingly destined for each other. The book continues with exciting and inconvenient travels through time, a love that can only be described as hopelessly romantic, and an ending that will both fill and break your heart at the same time.

Should Henry and Claire really be together? Are heartbreaking tribulations worth so much sacrifice? Did Claire ever really have a chance of not loving Henry? If given the choice, would you take that step over the edge again with the one you're fated to be with? These are the questions that echo through my mind after reading such a novel that felt truly timeless to me. These are the questions I would like you to answer for yourself if you go out on a limb with me, and give this book a chance.

Now, movie?

This wonderful book, like so many before it, has been adapted for the big screen. To see or not to see? Well I think it all depends on personal preference, on how you feel about movies made from books. Are you open minded, and willing to give it a watch? Or are you so insistent about the details that the minute the movie isn't verbatim, you want to storm right out of the theater? I, for example, am more than willing to give my favorite books their big screen chance. For instance, Twilight. No where near page for page of the book, but it remains one of my favorite movies, and I am oh too excited to see the sequel New Moon. But another reason I think we should all give The Time Traveler's Wife a chance is the cast. Our leading couple is being played by Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, two of what I believe to be our best actors of the past few years. All in all, I think you should be open to the possibility of another great film to add to your favorites list, and you should definitely give the book its due.

Yours in Eternity, ACE ;)
