they wore flowers in their hair: a tribute to some female singers/songwriters of the 60s and the 70s
68
This is the sister hub to where have all the cowboys gone. Yes, now we have the cowgirls. Women whose music pushed buttons, erased boundaries and set the records straight through folk music, a little bit of country and a hint of blues. Though their songs have either found home in concert halls or on the streets, they have one thing common. They were always about love. Big love, small love. Love for freedom, love for peace. Love for flowers, love for man.
I hope you enjoy this little tribute as much as I enjoyed putting it together. And yes, it's another trip down memory lane that we all love bigtime.

Thos are wonderful talents. I always thought Janis Ian was a brave a bold artist. Society's Child and 17 told stories that had to be told. We've mostly gotten over the pain described in Society's Child but we still hold onto to treating people considered not as good looking like they have less value.
Elena
I won't ask why you dig Neil Diamond, er, the cowboys better. And I agree with you on Patsy Cline. Too bad she was gone too soon. Thanks for checking dem babes out :D
Pete
I agree, I think Janis Ian's mostly underrated if not for At Seventeen. Her music have always been strong and yes, bold. Strong commentaries that are somehow tragic in a sense.
Wow, you got some great ones. Just as a matter of observation, it may be helpful if you have the links open in another window, that way people will still have your page up and won't be as likely to wonder off distracted. I tend to do that a lot. Ohhhh, I see something shiny..... gotta go :)
PM
Thanks for dropping by. Hmm you have a point. I'll see about it. Thanks by the way.
Something shiny?! What is it? Okay tell me later! :D
Like Carol King, and Carly Simon.... but something much more special about the cowboys...............
Hmmm I guess the cowboys were more popular? At least to young girls then. I think.
Thanks for dropping by my friend :D
Love most of these -- have"As Tears Go By" playing in another window at the moment -- great collection of songs (I grew up with these in my head. . .).
Teresa
Ah but your pleasure is my business. So your comment means business is good. LOL Thanks for dropping by and I see you're still on the bus - great song that one.
Classics!! The best of the best! If you were to list them all, it would take many more hubs! Good job!
Cris A, this hub is beautifully done with a very creative layout. Nice tribute.
Candie
Yeah I know. It is unfortunate but I'm only up for a one hub. Anyway, thanks glad you liked this.
Journey*
The ladies above deserve nothing less so I tried to come up with something worthy. Thanks for stopping by :D
Once again, you hit the nail right on the head. Well done Chris :D
janetta
Thanks for the affirmation! I appreciate it :D
My Saturday evening listening all set up - thanks for the memories !
Glad to be of service Iphi :D
Cris as usual you put together a great list . Joni Mitchell has to be one of the best all time singer/songwriters there has ever been . And Carole King has written so many hits Including The Monkees " Pleasant Valley Sunday " . That woman was phenomenal . I just wanted to add Tammy Wynette , Laura Nyro and Grace Slick during her Jefferson Airplane days
Hate to be a snob but It says alot about modern music these days when Lady Ga Ga Is the best they can do .
tony
Hey music man! First, I'm glad you like this for I value your musical taste (because it's so similar to mine! LOL). Yes, when I was doing research for this, Mitchell and King apparently has written popular songs for other artists as well. So yeah, they're up there in the greastest songwriters ever ever. I'll look into the others you mentioned though I have included Slick in one my hubs before.
You? A snob? I don't think so, you just tell it as you see it. I mean so what if you much prefer Cher over Lady Ga Ga! LOL Thanks for dropping by man ;D
Everybody will have their own list of favorites, especially those of us that were there (Me? I'm not telling) but you did a great job!
Okay, I won't ask. Hey new avatar! Ha! I'm zooming in! NOW!
And oh thanks again for dropping by! :D
Wonderful Cris, a soothing end to the day, thank you.
janis joplin..Saw her when she first did gigs locally...she was great and I love that photo of her..Me and Bobby Mcgee, running through my head now..oh no all day...ooops
If I hold back, I'm no good. I'm no good. I'd rather be good sometimes, than holding back all the time."
Nicely done sweetie, very nice..la la la la la lala la laaaaaa. :O) Hugs G-Ma who lurve's you
Hawke
Glad to know this completed your day. Thanks.
G-Ma
That's a wonderful experience - seeing a Joplin gig! Wow I could only dream of that.
And I see the memory's got you singing! Ha! Lurve ya back :D
Since I don't enjoy many female voices I'll be nosy instead! :P
How old are you really Chris...you seem to be wallowing in nostalgia these days! :P
LOL Alright I'm in my 30s already but i feel like I'm pushing 50 with these kinds of hubs that I've been doing. Like I said before, I'm the youngest in a brood of 7 so that should explain my exposure to some really old music. And the 70s is not even old.
I really love nostalgia, probably because I think I'm an old soul :D
Excellent, Cris! I think some modern day ones that were maybe born in the wrong era and could easily slot into that list if they were older, Kim Carnes, Tanita Tikaram, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega and Michelle Shocked.
Everyone loves nostalgia...those were the days indeed! :)
Cindy
Yeah, I've considered including them too, Tracy Chapman, k.d. lang etc. But maybe on another hub with a more contemporary theme. Thanks glad you like this.
FP
Yeah those were the days, my friend. :D
Beautiful...this brings back a lot of memories. Tony0724: Laura Nyro "Christmas and the Beads of Sweat" --what a fantastic talent she was. A hauntingly evocative songwriter. And Joni Mitchell--gosh, got that vinyl to back up those claims.....over here at the House of Vinyl.... Wonderful hub. (As usual!!)
Nice! What about Karen Carpenter? and Cher? Very appropriate video by the way.
And yet another of Cris A's classic hubs - a feast for the ears and the eyes! Wonderful choice - well, maybe you need another hub with the ones not there?? :) I'm coming back to listen to all of them!
Dink
Ah memories, light the corners of our minds. Misty weater-coloured memories...LOL I still love the vinyls specially the little sctarchy sounds they make.
Frieda
Maybe a next chapter? Thanks!
Shalini
Thanks very much, coming from a lover of good music well it seems I made the right choices! Yeah maybe another one of this. Enjoy the music and of course the memories, too! :D
Hey Cris - congrats on the 500 fans - no one deserves it more!
Shalini
Thanks! I saw the thread and I'm not surprised you started it! :D
I just love Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. Glad you included them in your tribute. Almost wish I lived in those times, seemed so free to express yourself in music & writing. I do not think music these days are like these anymore. Where have all the flowers gone? Beautiful hub Chris, as always. Congratz on 5-0-0 fans! Wishing you 1-0-0-0 more!
Sandy
Me too! I wish I also lived that era! It's so decadent and free and all the most romantic things in life! Thanks for being part of that Hawaii 5-0-0 LOL :D
It's a good thing most of them had revivals, that's why I also enjoyed listening to the songs =)
You have presented this beautifully!
I also thank God for revivals and older sisters and brothers!
Glad you like this. Thanks for dropping by :D
Oh Cris, you did it again. I sang and danced to all above. Patsy Cline just lived down the road from here. You have my toes tapping and my rocking chair---rocking.
Ms Ginn
I'm glad this brought another wave of bigtime nostalgia for you! And yeah, move them feet to the music! Really Ms Cline was a neighbor? Cool! Keep on rocking and thanks for dropping by :D
Some of my favourites here Cris...especially, Where have all the flowers gone and Me and Bobby McGee.
Thank you, thank you, thank you :)
Great cowgirls all Cris. good job and congrats on the fan thing. I am still one too so it is really plus 1, even with the 550 alter ego thing. LOL
diana
I love those songs too! Anything to make you guys feel nostalgic... in a good way :D
C!
Well look who the cat dragged in! Hey there, glad you can spare me a comment. Thanks for checking in on me again. Yes I always count you in so the fan number is actually bigger than what is shown but that's our secret! Glad to see ya! :D
Carole King was such a powerhouse of a songwriter with huge influence over the direction of popular music to this day. I have to say I always preferred her versions to her many covers.
True that. And her Tapestry is still one of the greatest albums ever. Thanks for dropping by NT :D
Joplin....and mama cass...my favorites....cool choices and great work! LYM! :)
Cris, marvelous tribute!!! I love, love, love Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Carly Simon.
You did a beautiful job reminding us all of that incredibly fertile and spirited era!
Tom - thanks for the L! :D
Rina - We share the same favorites. Cool! That's a great era for almost everything. Thanks for dropping by :D
Awesome collection, Cris!!!! Some of my favorite women ever!!!!! This is a great tribute!
AMB
Glad to see you! It's been a long time. Anyway, thanks it's really hard not to make these women favorites. Thanks for dropping by :D
Pretty good stuff!
One shameless post begets another:
http://hubpages.com/hub/Marianne-Faithful
Now I Really gotta go work-out!
LOL as long as it's you! Will check it out later when you're done working out.
Catch ya later :D
Grooovy stuff! Love it. Great artists that changed the face of music and so many other things for women. Thanks for this hub!
Yeah groovy is the word! Be sure to check out their male counterparts, Thanks for dropping by! Flower power to you! :D
I am feeling so sentimental after reading and listening to the great music you put together in this hub. Carly Simon a personal favorite; saw her in concert in Cape Code, Massachusetts; my home state and place of her summer home.
I recall back too of when my daughter was in the third grade and I volunteered to read a story to the kids and chose "Amy the Dancing Bear" authored by Carly and we ended with music of Carly singing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and the kids voluntarily got up one by one and danced. Fun day and Chris, thanks for the memories!
Ahh, Cris my lurve, it is no big surprise to me that you would choose the finest of the fine to give us. They all have one thing in common, they all sing from the heart, just like you write from the heart. Every single one of these ladies sang with such strong emotion. I grew up singing all of their songs, my personal favorite is Joplin. I can never get enough of, "Piece of my heart" :-)
G-ma, I am so green with envy that you got to see Joplin, her videos are amazing :-)
Dottie
I'm glad this hub brought back good memories. That must be awesome, seeing a Carly Simon's concert.
Oh right, she is also a children's story author too! I think I Itsy Bitsy Spider is also featured (sampled) in her song Coming Around Again. Thanks for dropping by :D
Whikat
Ah my lurve that's too much - but you can't take it back now! LOL So you're a big Joplin fan, cool!
Yes that G-Ma! She's still rockin up to now! :D
I know that they are slightly newer than what you are going for but you cannot forget the Indigo Girls. They are always playing on my iPod.
Yep indeed, they are relatively newer compared to those I included here. I also like he Indigo Girls specially Kid Fears and Galileo. Maybe another hub? Thanks for dropping by :D
Great artists and I love the layout! Beautifully done as usual. I loved "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "House of the Rising Sun" and "Crazy" and...and...LOL, too many to list!
LOL maybe you should hub about your favaorites too and then we shall compare notes! Whaddayasay? :D
Thanks for dropping by! :D
A damn fine job of compilation....I kept thinking..."he forgot.....no...there she is.....but what about......no....there she is..." I finally came up with 2 additions....Stevie Nicks and Cher, .....just saying....
R.!
LOL and I still missed two! Oh but wait! Stevie Nicks is on my other hub! While Cher...well other than the fact that the things that come to my mind when I hear her name is "Do you believe in life after love....." and her farewell tour that's been going on for five years (say goodbye already!) I think she belongs in another category. What could that category be... I'll think it out! thanks for dropping by :D
The first thing that comes to mind with Cher....is her with Sonny...singing "I got you babe", Gypsies Tramps and Thieves
Oh right, Bono & Cher! Just like Ike & Tina - I think I know what my next hub will be! Ha! Thanks for reminding me R. Yep, great song that one. :D
Do I get a half credit or anything on the next hub??? LOL Great Duos!! that broke up and became better as individual artists.
No you won't. And I'll delete our little exchanges above for good measure! LOL Of course!
I'd have to agree, I guess as solo artists they got to express themselves more or better. :D
Just a mention will do...like "you know that asshole R. Blue mentioned something that reminded me of this hub"
Glad to know you have it planned already. Thanks, now all I havta do is copy that and paste it on the would-be hub! :D
Maybe we could do a collaboration....then we can split up...and both do better hubs.....
You know what, that's an idea right there. And it sounds great to me! How do we go about it? Email me when you come up with something :D
LOL.... It's not a bad idea after all is it? I think it would be a first.
I'm not sure about it being a good or bad idea, but it's definitely something new! LOL Sleep on it. Or you can do your own spin on it - I won't mind. And I would be willing to help you out in any way. Besides, it's your idea to begin with. :D
What a great group of singers! I'm not old enough to have been around then, but I know my music, and I am glad to have walked down memory lane here! Thanks!
Me too, I was actually born during the 70s. But hey, good thing for us music never dies. Specially the good ones! Glad you made the trip. Thanks for dropping by :D
Rita Coolidge is another one you'd like, you have impeccable taste in Music and I agree with all of your choices. Super Hub! I was born in the 50's and each Artist you mentioned brings back some great memories then and now.
I'm not too familiar with Miss Coolidge, but I'll check her out. Glad to be of service. Be sure to check my other hub on the men of the same era :D
I saw Joan Baez in concert a few years ago. It was a classy act.
Really?! That's cool! I bet it was an awesome experience for you! :D
Oh Cris , Thanks for some of the memories with my grandparents in the summer I started crying. Harry Belafonte and Odetta brought back so many good times and I miss my grandparents. Loretta Lynn was one of my mom's all time favorites what a great list. :)
This little light of mine, I 'm gonna let it shine, there's a hole in the bucket dear liza, dear liza .... you brought them back thank you. :)
AE
Good memories always do that to me, too. Good tears I call them. Thanks for dropping by and taking the trip down memory lane :D
Dear Cris, You've created a majorly successful "template" into which you can drop any number of subjects -- an updated list of cowboys and cowgirls, movie stars, whatever. It's fascinating to read the birth (and death) info about these talents, and the photos you pick are always haunting (in a good way).
I love every single one of your honorees. Each in her own way contributed something incredible to musical history. And I do recognize that women artists almost always (ok, always always) take a back seat to men. Even us women tend to prefer male voices. Don't know why that is exactly...
BTW, Do you know the old trivia question who slept with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in that order???
(The answer is noneother than Judy Collins, for whom Suite Judy Blue Eyes was penned).
MM
Glad you appreciate this. I do make it a appoint to pick the pictures that remind the readers of the artists at their most beautiful.
That's an interesting point. However, I don't have the answer but I can offer an opinion. It's probably because entertainment is a male-dominated industry. From the exceutives to the jockeys who play the music on the radio.
Really? I didn't know that! Well at least Ms Collins has taste. LOL :D
Cris, there is so much crazy good music here. Thanks!
RB
Crazy in a good way! Glad you checked this out. Btw, I shot one back. Check your inbox :D
In a VERY good way. Did the pics come through?
RB
Yes they did. So what are you waiting for? Work on it and set HP on fire! :D
Lovely job.
Hey thanks Cailin. Glad you like this, too :D
Now this is my cup of tea. Great video. Joan Baez Mmmm.
Great Hub Chris!
sixty
I knew you'd like this! thanks for dropping by :D

Great job! I reckon I dig the cowboy boys better than their female counterparts, but I admit to having a thing for Patsy Cline, her songs always put me in *that* mood. Carly Simon and Carole King also do the trick every now and again. Muy bien!
