TimeSplitters 4
(Disclaimer: This Hub is fan speculation; there's no guarantee that any of these features will appear in TimeSplitters 4.)
TimeSplitters 4 is the proposed succesor to 2005's TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. There was a little bit of concern over the status of the sequel, because Free Radical, the developer of the TimeSplitters franchise dissolved, leaving the future of the quirky first person shooter in video game development hell.
Thankfully, Free Radical became Crytek UK, and TimeSplitters 4 is still slated to be released for next-gen consoles! Details about the game are sparse, but a great deal of concept art and a few TimeSplitters teaser videos were released. So that can only lead us to wonder what new features we can except from the next TimeSplitters game...
TimeSplitters 4 Story
After having successfully defeated Jacob Crow and destroyed the time crystals (therby eliminating the TimeSplitters), Sgt. Cortez decides to take a much needed break from fighting.
While on vacation in the South Pacific, Cortez notices what looks like a bubble appear in the distance. Shortly after, futuristic gunfire erupts from the strange object, and Cortez moves to investigate. With no hesitation, he leaps inside the bubble, preparing for the worst.
What he discovers confuses him: instead of being in a futuristic setting like he had expected, he appeared in a prehistoric period of time. Soon Cortez realizes that these bubbles are really timeloops, anamolies in space and time where history literally repeats itself! Cortez cuts his vacation short, and returns to the Spacetime Marine HQ, trying to come to terms with the idea that the Timesplitters may have returned!
TimeSplitters 4 will take Cortez from everywhere from the American Revolution to post-apocalyptic Europe, to the surface of a strange meteor that has recently begun orbiting the Earth...
TimeSplitters 4 Gameplay
TimeSplitters 4's story mode will play on the concept of history repeating itself in each of the Campaign levels. Cortez receives an upgraded Temporal Uplink with the ability to go back and forth through time during the levels! This means that the player can use time travel to affect the physical structure of levels to solve puzzles and do other things! For instance, if Cortez brings a weapon from the future into the past, it will cause the technology of the following time periods to advance more quickly!
TimeSplitters 4 will also finally give players to ability to perform dodges like the CPU players could do in previous TimeSplitters games! With the press of a button and the tilt of the directional pad, players can dive, slide, roll, and cartwheel to avoid gunfire. In order to preven abuse and spam, firing while dodging will be impossible, and there will be a lag period after an evasive manuver is performed.
Also, TimeSplitters 4 will include the ability to jump. No longer will players be nailed to the ground. Now they can leap and reach higher ledges, avoid gunfire, or just stomp on enemies. This leads to new possibilites for hectic gameplay, and could possibly be used to jump out of vehicles, GTA-style and more.
TimeSplitters 4 Features
Mapmaker, a staple of the TimeSplitters series will experience an overhaul for the fourth installment of the series. There will be more varied shaped pieces to give levels a greater feel of realism, there will be more tilesets, and the ability to import textures from photographs of images files.
Other features of previous TimeSplitters games will make a comeback as well, like the Challenges and Arcade League, but there will be a difficulty increase to rival that of TimeSplitters 2. Many people felt Future Perfect was too easy, even on the hardest setting. So to remedy that, TimeSplitters 4 will feature challenging, but not overly impossible, missions and settings.
TimeSplitters 4 will also feature a Character Maker, where players will be able to create customized characters, edit their physical features and attributes, and add them to the sprawling roster of playable characters! They will be able to take these characters online, and trade characters with other players.
Lastly, the Online mode will feature the expected lounges, ranking systems and networking as previous installments. There will also be a Time Faction feature, representing the nine time periods included in the game. Players can choose to join a faction, and there will be Time Wars to see which era will become the dominant one. Joining Factions will limit the weapons available to the player, in order to differentiate them from the others.
