Tinnitus - Multiple Causes Explained

What is it that causes tinnitus, which millions suffer from some form of? Tinnitus can be caused by various factors therefore it is difficult to pinpoint an exact cause. Ear damage is the most common cause of tinnitus. The reason could be an injury, infection or any other type of medical condition.

Damage to the tiny hairs found in the inner ear can cause tinnitus. When these hairs come in contact with sound waves, they will move. Motion triggers an electrical signal to be sent to your brain through the auditory nerve and on to your brain which translates it to sound. These hairs get damaged and they send random electrical impulse to the brain causing tinnitus.

Hearing loss can be just a sign of aging.

Otosclerosis is often a cause of changes which occur in the bones of the ear.

Earwax accumulation.

Injuries either in the head or neck.

Another inner ear disorder is called Meniere's disease.

A non-cancerous tumor that develops on the cranial nerve running from the brain to the inner ear is called an acoustic neuroma. This condition may cause tinnitus along with balance and hearing problems.

There are some people that believe tinnitus is caused by stress, depression, muscle spasms, TMJ(Temporomandibular Joint Syndorme), but many medical professionals don't agree with it. Many think that tinnitus may be the causal factor in individuals becoming anxious and depressed, however, these issues may be the reason why symptoms worsen.

Tinnitus can be caused by numerous types of medications, such those used in treatment of cancer, excessive aspirin, water pills, antibiotics,Quinine. These sounds occur either intermittently or continuously.

The reasons for the pulsatile tinnitus is given below:

  • Increase of blood pressure due to hypertension, stress, caffeine etc.
  • Ageing or cholesterol build-up causes Atherosclerosis.
  • Tumors that present themselves on the neck or head.
  • Deformed capillaries forming between arteries and veins.
  • There are conditions that can cause an unstable blood flow.

Tinnitus can also result from exposure to loud sounds and from ongoing health problems. Any loud noise can harm your ears, especially if there is repeated and regular exposure to it. This is the reason for which ear plugs are used if you work around machines or spend long time in listening to loud music. Regarding the protection of your ears, short-term exposure to loud noises may cause only temporary problems, where as long-term exposure can do permanent damage.
