How to know when to change your oil

STOP. Think, what type of oil did you put in at your last oil change? Was it conventional or synthetic? How long is your oil supposed to last? What about your filter? These questions are necessary to finding out when it is appropriate to change your oil.

3000 miles, the MAGIC number?

Is 3000 miles the limit on how long your oil will last?  Most people will tell you that 3000 miles is when you should or have to change it.  That depends on the factors brought out in the questions that i have mentioned.  By knowing these few simple facts about your oil and filter you can plan on when to change your oil and how to possibly lenthen the time between changes.

Choosing an oil that will work

Choosing an oil isn't difficult but it is oversimplified in most cases nowdays.  When choosing an oil think of your driving.  How many miles do you put on in say a week.  If you commute quite a distance daily you may want a oil that has a longer life.  A filter that matches your oils life expectancy would be a good decision to effectively extend life.  Oil brands that i personally recommend are: Mobil 1, Lucas, Royal purple, Quaker state, and Vavoline.  Each of these brands have different oils for different applications.  Such as a car with high miles, or a freshly broken in car, if you want an oil to last 5000 miles instead of 3000, or if you want an increase in horsepower.

Conventional or Synthetic?

Manufacturer Specifications for your car may require a synthetic or a conventional.  Some may ask for a synthetic conventional blend.  Sticking with what your car maker recommends for your car is a good way to go to avoid complications.

So by following these tips on how to know when to change your oil as a part of regular maintenance your car should run properly.
