How I Learned About TMJ
The first time I heard the acronym TMJ was when a nephew of mine suddenly complained of pain right by the the jaw and my aunt said it's his TMJ. I never really understood until they have explained it to me and I did some research on the internet.

Factors That Cause TMJ
TMJ is what they call the disorder of the jaw joint called Temporo Mandibular Joint disorder. It is caused by several factors. The following are some of them:
1. Emotions - you might be wondering how? Well, this means strong emotions such as anger, depression, anxiety and so on. These emotions causes stress that make muscles tight and in constant pressure causing pain or even displacing the whole jaw.
2. Trauma - accidents, a fall, a punch on the jaw and others can cause damage to muscles and joints which in turn cause pain and the other symptoms such as locking of the jaw.
3. Grinding and clenching - This is also called Bruxism. Grinding and clenching for no purpose at all particularly when asleep can cause fatigue to the joints and may cause swelling, pain and tenderness in the area.
4. Bad bite - when the teeth both lower and upper do not move together in harmony they put pressure on the joints. The misalignment can also cause strain to the muscles.
The Common TMJ Symptoms
The usual symptoms are pain on the jaw, ear, head, neck or shoulders, swelling on the area of the jaw or even mouth near the affected area, difficulty to open the mouth, locking of the jaws partially of full, the sounds on the joints sometimes described as snapping, clicking or popping, ringing in the ear and hearing loss and so on.
Known Treatments For TMJ
For treatment what worked for my nephew is TMJ exercises. This is not the only available treatment for TMJ disorder though. Treatments range from pain relievers, relaxants, anti-inflammatory, splint devices, stress management counseling to surgical procedures on teeth and jaws. One thing I have noticed is that these treatments present temporary relief and does not guarantee anything.
TMJ exercises on the other hand is safe compared to the use of medicines and surgery. With exercise you don't need any dental implants done on you and no wearing of special devices. It is safe and also effective as it focuses on the main factors that cause the disorder.
TMJ Exercises
These exercises are meant to target the joints and the muscles on the face, head, neck and shoulders. With exercises will have to relax and decrease the stress, pressure and tension on the joints and all the muscles involving the movements of the jaws. These TMJ exercises also would make the weak muscles that are directly attached to the jaw joints stronger as to make a lasting effect on the joints.
