I am not going to lie, my house is not spotless. I succumb to clutter and dust just like every other busy, working woman. However, my home is not a disaster area either. I am able to keep the house presentable enough that if I get an unexpected knock on the door, I am not petrified about the state of my home's interior. That is, unless, the unexpected guest needs to use my bathroom.

The bathroom, as a whole, is often in need of some attention – between the trashcan full of tissues during cold season and the hair that wasn't completely removed from the bathtub drain. However, the main culprit is the toilet It typically needs a good scrubbing, but I just hate doing it. Well, it must be done and here are some tips to help.

CLEAR THE AREA

Before you start to clean the toilet (inside and out), remove excess items – from knickknacks to the tissue box to the stack of magazines in your "bathroom reading section." Removing these items will keep you from cleaning a further mess if your cleanser or toilet brush splashes water out of the bowl or if you accidentally knock an item into the bowl.

FLUSH, THEN CLEAN

First remove any lose dirt and begin your cleaning with cleaner water by flushing before you start to clean. IMPORTANT TIP: Put the lid down before you flush to minimize splashing. Once you have a fresh bowl of water treat the interior of the bowl with your favorite toilet bowl cleaner. Try to get the solution as close to the rim as possible.

LET THINGS SOAK IN

Busy yourself with cleaning the outside of the toilet while the cleaning solution has a chance to break up the muck in the bowl. Don't forget while you are cleaning to also clean the toilet seat (top and bottom). This often-overlooked part of the toilet is the moist important to clean.

SCRUB TOP TO BOTTOM

Once the solution has had a chance to penetrate the dirt and grime in the bowl, scrub the inside of the bowl (using a sponge, scouring pad, or toilet brush) starting with the area closest to the rim. Work your way to the hole at the bottom of the bowl.

FLUSH AGAIN AND WIPE

Put down the lid and flush away the cleaning solution and grime. Wipe any spills that may have occurred.

There it is – a clean toilet. I guess it isn't that tough to do, but I'm still in no rush to clean my toilet.
