In most cases tonsil stones are formed in our tonsils gland-like structures located at the back of the neck. We also have one located in a pocket on each side. The tonsils are made of tissue that contains lymphocytes - cells in the body to prevent and fight infections. It is believed that the tonsils play a role in the immune system and is designed to function as network, traps incoming bacteria and viruses that pass through the neck.

Most medical experts agree that the tonsils are often unable to do his job fine. In many cases, they become more of a medical harm than good. It may be that the tonsils were developed in an environment where people are not exposed to as many germs as we face today as a result of living in areas with relatively high populations. Evidence suggests that people who have tonsils removed are more likely to suffer from bacterial or viral infections than those with intact tonsils.

Your tonsils are filled with nooks and crannies where bacteria and other materials, including dead cells and mucous membranes, can be trapped. When this occurs, the debris concentrated in white formations found in his pockets.
Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, formed when the trapped debris hardens or calcifies. This tends to occur most often in people who suffer from chronic inflammation of the tonsils or repeated bouts of tonsillitis. While many people have small tonsilloliths to develop in his tonsils, it is quite unusual to have a large, hardened tonsil stone.

Many small tonsil stones do not cause any noticeable symptoms. Even when they are large, are some tonsil stones discovered incidentally on x-ray or CT scans. Some larger tonsilloliths may have several symptoms; Bad breath - One of the main indicators of a tonsil stone is extremely bad breath or bad breath, accompanying a tonsil infection.

A study of patients with a form of chronic tonsillitis using a special test to see if the volatile sulfur compounds found in the subjects’ breath. The presence of these compounds providing objective evidence of bad breath. The researchers found that 75% of the people who had abnormally high levels of these compounds were also tonsilloliths or tonsil stones. Other researchers have suggested that the tonsil stones considered in situations where the cause of bad breath is in question:

1) Sore Throat Occurrence. When a tonsil stones and tonsillitis occur together, it can be difficult to determine if the pain in the neck depends on your infection or tonsil stones. The presence of a tonsil stones itself, but can make you feel pain or discomfort in the area where it is made.

2) White Trash Comes Visible. Some of the tonsil stones are visible on the back of the throat than the flat white solid substance. This is not always the case. Often they are hidden tonsils. In these cases they may only be detectable using non-invasive scanning techniques such as CT scans or magnetic resonance imaging.

3) Difficulty in swallowing. Depending on the location or size of the tonsil stones, it may be difficult or painful to swallow food or liquids.

4) Ear Pain. Tonsil stones may develop in any tonsil. Because of shared neural pathways, they can cause a person to feel pain for the ear, even though the stone itself does not touch the ear.

5) Swelling of The Tonsils. After collecting the debris hardens and forms tonsil stones, inflammation, infection (if any) and the tonsil stone itself can cause tonsil swell or become larger.

Appropriate treatment depends on the size of the tonsil stone tonsillolith and it can cause discomfort, or medical harm. Different options are:

1) Does Not Care. Many of the tonsil stones, especially those who are asymptomatic, require no special treatment.

2) DIY At Home Removal. Some people want to remove tonsil stones home to use picks or swabs.

3) Using Salty Water Gargles. Gargling is warm, salt water may help relieve the discomfort of tonsillitis, which is often associated with tonsil stones.

4) Using Antibiotics. Different antibiotics may be used to treat tonsil stones. Although they may be useful for some people, they cannot resolve the basic problem, which causes tonsilloliths. Even antibiotics can have side effects.

5) Through Surgical Removal. When the tonsil stones are very high and the symptoms, surgery may be necessary to remove them. In some cases, the physician can perform this relatively simple procedure using a local numbing agent. After tonsil stone the person does not need general anesthesia.

Since tonsil stones are more common in people with chronic tonsillitis, the only sure way to prevent their occurrence and the surgical removal of the tonsils. This procedure, known as the tonsillectomy, the tonsils completely removed from tissues, eliminating the possibility of tonsillolith formation. Unlike tonsil stone quarrying, operation usually performed with general anesthesia tonsillectomies. Patients undergoing surgery have difficulty swallowing and sore throat for a few days after.
