Laughter is the best medicine. How many times have you heard that saying? Well its true. When you laugh, you forget even for a short while about whats bothering you. A good gut busting...
I had so much fun researching this topic. I wanted to do something a little different because we always focus on the men. Also I wanted to continue on the topic of laughter which my other hub is about.
My list of top 5 is not in any particular order because I would be stumped when it comes to choosing who would go first. The top 5 are; Wanda Sykes, Ellen Degeneres, Sheryl Underwood, Sommore and Kathy Griffin. This is my top 5 female comics that are out there and still in your face in 2009. They get me laughing every time. These women talk about everything just like the guys do. Believe me though they are not afraid to either. They are just as raw and raunchy as the men with the cussing and the topics that they choose.
If you like to laugh and laugh hard then you’ll enjoy these women. The only person on this list that isn’t raw like the rest is Ellen Degeneres but I love to watch her show.
Ellen Degeneres
Ellen Degeneres, was born on January 26, 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana. She is well known today for her Emmy award winning show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The show which aired in September 2003, has won many awards over the years. The show has won her countless Emmys for Favourite Funny Female Star, Favourite Talk Show Host and Favourite Yes I Chose This Star.
Ellen’s signature style on the show is a button down shirt with a vest or sleeveless/sweater over it, a pair of pants and sneakers. She starts off the show by dancing with her studio audience. Sometimes she does a short stand up routine.
Apart from her successful show, Ellen has does work in many movies such as Coneheads and Finding Nemo. Her sitcom Ellen which aired from1994–1998 became the place for her “outing”. She announced publicly in 1997 that she was gay.
Sheryl underwood
Sheryl Underwood, was born
on October 28, 1963 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
She is a writer, actress, producer and stand up comic who was elected as the
23rd International President of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority in 2008.
Sheryl’s arrival to the BET comedy stage pumped her career up with wins in both The Funniest Female Comedian on Comic View award in 1994 and the BET Comedy Awards’ Platinum Mic Viewers Choice Award in 2005.
She has appeared in movies such as The Beauty Shop, I Got the Hookup and Bullworth. Her tv appearances include BET Comicview, Getting Played, The Best of Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen and Dr. Phil show.

She
has been a guest on the tv shows The Hughleys , The Parkers
and Oprah to name a few. She was one of the stars of The Queens of Comedy tour.
Kathy Griffin
Kathy Griffin, was born Kathleen Mary Griffin on November 4, 1960 in Oak Park, Illinois. She was a member of the Groundlings, an improv group before doing stand up in and around L.A.
Her first foray into movies was in the horror film The Unborn. Some of her films are Pulp Fiction, The Cable Guy, On Edge and Bachelor Party Vegas. Tv credits include Ugly Betty, Suddenly Susan, Celebrity Mole, Ellen and the View.
Kathy has a unique style of humour that focuses on trash talking celebrities. It’s all supposed to be in the spirit of fun though. Some of her topics in regard to celebrities are plastic surgery, addictions, Scientology and stars who are still in the closet about being gay.
Currently she is in the fifth season of her solo reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, on the cable network Bravo. In 2007 she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program.
Wanda Sykes
Wanda Sykes was born on March 7, 1964, in Portsmouth, Virginia. She got her big break in stand up when she opened for Chris Rock and then became a part of the writing team for The Chris Rock Show in 1997. It also provided her numerous opportunities for guest appearances.
Writer, author, producer, actress and stand up comic, Wanda Sykes, has many film and television credits to her name. Most noteworthy films are Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, Monster-in-Law, Evan Almighty, and License to Wed. Tv credits include The Drew Carey Show, The Chris Rock Show and Wanda at Large. She has done voice over for films as well.
Wanda won the American Comedy Award for Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic in 2001 and several Emmys for her work on Inside the NFL. In 2004, she was named as one of the 25 funniest people in America by Entertainment Weekly.
I hope that you enjoyed these five women that are brimming with talent in the comedy arena. I know that I did. Keep on laughing or smiling. That's good too.
