4 Traits You Need to Succeed in Online Education
61Online Education
There are four traits you need to be successful at taking classes or a degree online. You need to be self-disciplined. You need time-management skills. You need to be self-motivated, and you need to be able to work alone.
One trait you need to succeed in online education is self-discipline. No one will be pushing you to get your assignments done on time except for you. In this regard, you are your own boss. No teacher is standing over you to get the work done. No parent is egging you on. Your spouse has her own affairs to take care. It's all on you. It's all up to you to take full responsibility for getting the work done. This calls for self-discipline on your part to do the work required of you to pass your online class or get your degree.
Not only must you be self-disciplined, you must also possess time-management skills. Most students who are enrolled in taking classes online, research tells us, are adults with full-time responsibilities. They are most likely to be working a full-time job. Many of them have families and are raising kids who they must devote time to as well. Not only that, they are also engaged in other social activities. All of this was true for me when I was pursuing my degree online. And all of this is true for people who are presently pursuing their degrees online. In a word: Online students are very busy people with little time on their hands. This is why time-management skills are of the utmost importance. You have to be able to juggle a full schedule of daily responsibilities and still be able to find the time to pursue a degree online. You can't say like John McCain that I am dropping everything-the debate included-to concentrate on the economy alone.
In addition to the above named traits of self-discipline and time-management, students who choose to pursue a degree online also need to be self-motivated. They must motivate themselves to work when they really do not want to do so. They must choose to go to the online library and conduct research over watching a sitcom on television or going to a party with friends. They must motivate themselves to make the right decision even though it might be the less pleasurable choice. Let's face it. You are in this online education thing alone. There is probably no one constantly cheering you on and encouraging you to make the right decision, which, of course, is to forgo the fun for now and make the required sacrifices so that you can attain your goal in the end--an online degree.
Finally, to be a success in online education requires that you are capable of working alone. The pursuit of an online degree is, in most cases, a lonely pursuit. There is no one in your classroom--your home--but you. There is no human flesh to press. There is no actual student lounge to hang out in. There is no one to interact with in the hallway between classes. And there is no one to have lunch with. All of your interaction are in the virtual world of cyberspace, And that, mind you, is not a real replacement for actual intimacy, that is, genuine human interaction. Again, the pursuit of an online degree, in a real sense, consists solely of YOU and your virtual classmates and teacher. Because of that, you have to be able to work alone.
To conclude, if you are self-disciplined, self-motivated, have time-management skills, and are capable of working alone, then you are most likely a good candidate for pursuing a degree online.
