Globalization needs leaerning more languages

Necessity of knowing more and more languages are increasing every day. State boundaries are going obsolete day by day with expansion of communication technology. Internet allows us to communicate globally. We are chatting with, making friends and involving ourselves into various businesses globally. Present age of globalization provides us opportunity to do so.

Different people use different languages as their mother tongues. However, we have accepted English as international means of communication. In addition, every one loves talking in one’s own language. It is always better to know more than one language. Many of us are used to in a language other than our mother tongue. Some of us are bi-lingual but this is not enough nowadays.

There is a thread in the forum that refers to tri lingual children. Some one in the thread has informed that there is no site or page in the web about tri-lingual children. This particular message encouraged me to write a hub about this subject.

It is very common in India to learn three languages in the schools. Every one knows that India is a diversified country. There are regional languages such as Bengali, Tamil, Assamese, Oria, Telegu, Malayalam and so on. Hindi is the national language. Urdu represents Islamic as well as Ganga-Jamuna culture of India. A lot of people tend to learn Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language.

Normally, people from non-Hindi belt of India learn Hindi as an additional language to communicate with the people out side their province. Hindi movies are popular all over India despite regional languages movies. This also helps people out side Hindi belt learn Hindi.

Learn Hindi

Indian schools teach three languages

India has accepted English as one of its official languages besides Hindi. Much of Government and administrative works are done in English. Large numbers of Indian youth are in business process outsourcing industry. They work in the call centers to provide services to their American clients. Many Indians are also working in different parts of the world especially in UK and USA. All these require them to learn English. More and more Indians are now learning English. India has the highest number of English speaking people in the world besides America.

Tri-lingualism comes from either blood or environment. Imparting training also plays a major role.

Indian schools have a system of teaching three languages. In many provinces, students have to adopt regional language as their first language. In those schools English is the second language and students can choose Hindi / Sanskrit / Urdu / or some other language as third.

I had my schooling in Azimganj, a small town in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. I have learned Bengali as my first language and second language English as compulsory subjects. There were three options for third language, i.e. hindi, Arabik and Sanskrit. I have chosen Hindi as it is the national language of India.

Central board of secondary education (CBSE) also provides opportunity to learn many languages in their schools.

Many of the Indians learn languages out side schools too. There is foreign language training institutes in many places. Universities also have foreign language courses in their curriculum. All these help Indian students learn more than two languages.

Learn early

It is better to learn languages in the early age. Young brains are like sponges, that absorb almost everything comes into contact. That is why Indian schools give opportunity to their pupils to learn more languages. It becomes little difficult for an adult to cope up with the stress of learning additional languages.

Learning more languages also increase capacity of human brain. It also increases one’s exposure to outer world. More language means more knowlege. One can introduce oneself with different pieces of literary works authored in different languages. One can also get an idea of different cultures through his or her exposure to various languages.

It has some social meaning too. It makes mother of those children proud.

Normally bi-lingual students perform better than monolingual and tri-lingual do far better. Knowledge of languages helps them a lot in building their career. It serves them as employment tool too. This also helps them communicating with their friends and relatives in multilingual society.

My grandmother used to read religious texts in Gujrati language. I have learned reading Gujrati sitting beside her in my early childhood. I had not to make much effort to understand the same. Similarly I get an exposure to Sanskrit and Prakrit text while learning Jain religion. Gujrati language helped me while travelling to Gujrat and Mumbai for business purposes. I am in Gems and Jewelry trade and most of the diamontaires are Gujratis.

Hi Amit,

You are one of the lucky one among many Indians. India has a trend of tri-lingualism and you are one of them. This will help you in this era of globalization.
