Troubleshooting Webcam Issues
75
Troubleshooting webcam issues should always start with the webcam itself. Make sure from the start you know how to use the webcam. This includes reading the manual and all the accompanying documentation with it. If you have an issues, first check to make sure the webcam is working properly. This can be done by turning off your computer, unplugging the webcam, turning your computer on and then plugging it back in. Let the system pick up the webcam, possibly reinstall or repair drivers and then see if that works. If not, chances are another problem is lurking between either the webcam, its connection or how you are broadcasting.
The next issue to check is whether or not the connection between the webcam and computer is active. This can be done in several ways. Whatever software you may be using can be utilized to test that the webcam is properly functioning. Your manual should detail how to go about checking if it is picking up images, movement and other functions. If you cannot find any sort of hardware defect, it is time to check the broadcasting method you are using.
In many cases, webcam issues arise from how you are broadcasting video. Many webcam users opt to utilize an instant messenger program, such as AIM or Yahoo, to use their webcam. This allows to users to watch one another while on a webcam or just allow one user to watch. Depending on the strength of the Internet connection, the particular connection when signing in to the instant message service and the settings of said program, you may or may not get a strong webcam broadcast.
If that is the case, you may have to choose another way to network webcams. Sometimes simply changing settings will work, in others you may have to download a whole new program. Either way, nine out of ten times, it is the program you are using to allow others to watch you on the webcam that causes the problem. Once you find the right program, you will be set to go.
