Introduction

Prolonged exposure to heavy levels of asbestos is the known cause to a rare and deadly type of cancer called mesothelioma. The tumor is often found in the protective membrane that covers most internal body organs. In the US, 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year. The prognosis is not good because the cancer is usually diagnosed when in the advanced stages. Symptoms typically appear after 30 to 50 years.

What Causes Mesothelioma?

Asbestos is the only known cause of the rare but fatal disease. When intact and by itself, asbestos is not harmful to health. But when damaged and disturbed, the mineral releases microscopic fibers that can be inhaled or ingested by humans unconsciously. These fibers enter the body and lodge in the tissues causing inflammation that will result to tumors. Many countries have outlawed mining asbestos but some still continue like Canada and Russia.

What are the Types of Mesothelioma?

  1. Pleural mesothelioma is found in the membrane that covers the lungs. This is the most common because it accounts for two-third of all cases. Signs of this type include: pain and tightness in the chest, dry and painful cough, shortness of breath, weight loss, and fatigue.
  2. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining that surrounds the abdominal cavity. Obvious symptoms can be pain and swelling in the stomach, vomiting, bowel movement difficulties, weight loss, and fatigue.
  3. Pericardial mesothelioma develops in the sac that covers the heart. Patients may suffer from chest pain, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations.

Diagnosing Mesothelioma

The cancer often has symptoms that resemble those of other benign diseases such as pneumonia and bronchitis. When seeking medical attention, patients should inform their doctors about past exposure to asbestos. A battery of medical tests will be performed to confirm the suspicious symptoms. With a positive diagnosis, the doctor and the patient can discuss about possible treatment options. Mesothelioma is not curable but there are a number of therapies available, including: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, alternative therapy, and participation in clinical trials.
