So you have been practising your typing and now you want to know how good you are. What you need is a typing speed test to check out your w.p.m. (words per minute) and your typing accuracy.

All the typing speed tests reviewed here are available online for free. I have tried them all out myself, and I'll even give you my score!

I have excluded from my reviews any speed test sites which produce ads in popup windows (at least those which tried to bring up popups when I used them).

My Results

TypingTest.com

This site offers a quick, easy-to-use typing speed test. You need to have Java 1.1 instaled (the site will guide you if you are not sure whether you have it).

You can choose the duration of your test to be 1, 2 or 3 minutes. There is a choice of five texts to copy, so you can do the test more than once and still get an accurate results. There is the option to choose to calculate your words per minute or characters per minute. Most typing speed calculations use words per minute.

When you start the test, be sure to type the title first. On my first try I didn't realize the title was part of the text to be copied, so I didn't do very well! The word which you should currently be typing is shown in blue and underlined, to help you keep your place. If you make a mistake you can backspace to correct it but once you have pressed space to move on to the next word, you can no longer go back.

When your time is up your results will be displayed.

My Results

These are the results from my second attempt at a speed test, although it was the first time with this text.

Typeonline.co.uk

Typeonline.co.uk offers a simple typing speed test. The text is displayed on the screen, you have to click a button when you are ready to start, type all of the text and then click another button to tell it when you have finished.

Having to click the button does lose you a bit of time though - you've got to find the mouse then move it to the right place.

When you have completed the typing test, your results (and any mistakes you made) will be displayed, then you are given the choice of trying another test with a different text.

Powertyping.com

This site offers just a short speed test. It is quick and easy to use. Click the button to start the test, then just copy the paragraph provided. As soon as you are finished typing the text, a popup will appear with your results - you don't have to find a button to click to tell it you've finished.

You can choose different texts with which to test your typing speed by clicking one of the buttons near the bottom of the screen.

My Results on Calculator Cat

CalculatorCat.com

At Calculator Cat you are given a paragraph to type. When you have finished typing, you can either click the Stop button or press Tab and Enter. Your words per minute score is then displayed for you.

Unlike most of the other tests, this one just gives you a straight words per minute score, and the results are not adjusted for accuracy.

My Speed

My Accuracy

khcc.org.uk

On this site, you have to click a button to start the test, then copy type a quotation by a famous person. When you have finished, you just hit enter. A message will pop up telling you your speed, then another for your accuracy.

If you score more than 10 words per minute, with 100% accuracy, you are invited to enter your name for the Hall of Fame.

Wow, I'm even worse than I thought! At 17 wpm, it's a good thing I have all day to compose a hub! Thanks for the great links. Guess I should practice before I go back, though.

Well, rmr, we all have to start somewhere. I learnt to type at school rather a long time ago, and I've never regretted it - keep practicing!

I think your hub is great. They need to develop a  speed test for a one finger typist that's me.

Thanks for this great link! Got 64 wpm for the first test, and would have got perfect accuracy if it was an English website and so had British spellings and not American! Well chuffed with that.
