Unique Christmas Ornaments
86My family has a Christmas Eve tradition that has been going on for generations. Since my kids were born (and as my Mom did for me, and her Mom did for her, etc.), each Christmas Eve I give them a Christmas tree ornament that is reflective of their interests or experiences during the year. As they leave home, get married and start a family, they already have a whole set of ornaments that have some family history to them and tell a story.
This has resulted in some very unique Christmas ornaments on my tree! Over the years, we've had pink flamingos, lots and lots of purple ornaments, and tons of shoe and purse ornaments. My son's ornaments are pretty boyish with lots of soccer, basketball, cars and trains.

Our family has always opened Christmas gifts on Christmas morning, so the ornament exchange was a nice way of kicking off the holiday by opening a gift on Christmas Eve. As the kids (and guests) come to the dinner table, each place setting is adorned with their beautifully wrapped ornament from Mom and Dad. The center of the table holds a large basket that everyone puts their wrapped ornaments for the others in. So they become multi-functional as well -- gifts AND a centerpiece!
As you start thinking about what ornaments you would like to get, just be sure that they are reflective of the person's personality, hobbies or tastes. Make it special, and make it unique. Your children will be sure to thank you when they go off on their own.

International Christmas Ornaments
When all else fails, turn to your heritage. If you're of German descent, a pickle ornament on your tree is a must-have. The legend of the Weihnachtsgurke (Christmas pickle), although some claim it's not true, states that each family hides a glass pickle ornament on the Christmas tree. The first child to find it gets a special treat or an extra present. Although this isn't practiced much currently, a hundred years ago in the United States it was tradition for the man of the house to get up after Christmas dinner and break a pig-shaped peppermint candy inside of a velvet bag. This was meant to bring good health and good luck to the family. Many Americans still hang a glass pig ornament on their tree every year reminiscent of this Christmas tradition.

Sports-themed Christmas Ornaments
Basketball, baseball, soccer and football christmas ornaments are everywhere all the time. Don't worry if your loved one is into more more obscure sports. Whether you're looking for a scuba-diving Santa or or a "ruck on" rugby ornament, trust me -- it exists somewhere and is waiting for you to bring it home.
Career-themed Christmas Ornaments
Whether you're buying for a doctor, lawyer, fireman or lumberjack, there are many unique christmas ornaments available to reflect their profession. Many of the ones you will find, however, are made from ceramic or clay and are typically personalized. If you want to be sure to find a true glass ornament, think of things that go along with the profession, such as a gavel for a judge, a hammer for a carpenter, etc.

I know! Can you believe we're creeping up on the holidays already!
I do the same thing only I have made them for all of my nieces and nephews what a wonderful hub and we are only 100 or so days away. I love Christmas but we are definitely not ready, but then again who is? lolololo :)
Isn't it a great tradition, AE? Yes, I've found it very difficult to concentrate on Christmas on this Labor Day summer holiday weekend!
Your tradition is wonderful! I'm not even thinking of Christmas yet but I know it will be here before I know it. Fun hub!!
ps- still LOVE your avatar :)
Thanks Madame! Seriously, it's been going on for generations on my Mom's side of the family. It was really wonderful when I got married and put up our first tree and there were lots of sentimental ornaments instead of the usual store-bought Christmas balls!
wow!!!! very nice:)
There are so many different kinds of Christmas tree ornaments out there, Irohner. Growing up Buddhist, we ironically celebrate Christmas due to our sponsor's practice of Christmas which was introduced to us in the early years when first my family came to the United States. I was once so angry at my own family one Christmas Eve that I decided to go out to the backyard and "get" my own Christmas tree. I told everyone that I didn't need them to enjoy Christmas. They all laughed in my face and told me,"Good luck getting presents!" Hey, I was 5, okay?
Dohn, that story is priceless!!!
We also have have this tradition but even the adults, well I guess we are all adults now, give each other ornaments. One year my daughter gave my mom a huge glitter ball knowing she would have to add it to her tree. It was pretty funny. I'm also thinking about Christmas this weekend; I'm working on handmade Christmas cards.
What a wonderful story. I think that is a wonderful tradition also. I'm a newbie and don't know what hubs to read first so I pick them by content. I'm glad I found this one. Thank you for your wonderful video too. Now I can start a new fun project with my god daughter.
I wanted to do a hub on this because my family had the same tradition, almost, in our case the orns. were given to the kids and then put on the family tree. Each year when the new orns. are placed on the family tree, we reminice (sp?) with a lot of "remember when stories". But alas I will leave it to you, you have set the bar too high for competition
Thanks for stopping by, Meschill and Tracy. And ATD, you are a hoot!
We have a similar ornament tradition in our family as well...even made a hub on it! Great minds think alike.:) Nice job on the hub. Love the unique ornaments.
My mom started this tradition with the first grandchild. Now each grandchild gets an ornament from both her and their parent. When my oldest set up her first tree as an adult, she called to let me know how special it was and how many conversations it started with her college friends. Then she reminded me that even though she was grown...she still expected Santa to visit each year with his ornament!
What a wonderful thing!! I am glad I found this hub as I have already started thinking about Christmas...This is a wonderful tradition!!! And great idea for Christmas gifts too! Thank you for writing this hub!!!
What a wonderful idea! I have been thinking about starting a tradition of getting the children Christmas ornaments, but didn't even know where to begin. Their interests are such a wonderful starting point.
GeneralHowitzer (I log out already) --- hehehe what a way to get traffic, promote and have a decent hub... Nice work here... Maybe I'll borrow this ideas in some of my hubs in the coming days... Great Hub Irohner Keep it up...
Merry Christmas Irohner! =)
That is such a unique idea. I've always just stuffed on the baubles etc that everyone else has, other than a few Winnie The Pooh ornaments when my son was younger, but this seems kind of fun. Not long til Christmas now so I'll give it some thought. Thanks for sharing.
Great hub. Love the idea of a unique centre piece filled with the ornaments that have been made.
Nice hub, thoughtfully presented.
Lovely hub - an excellent example! Love the tradition - I have given one of my sisters a "blue" ornament every year for ages, and I have a small collection of old world Santa ornaments and a few funky angels. Love your layout, too.
I like ornaments and this hub is very helpful!
Time is running extremely fast and Christmas is coming soon. This is the time to prepare some ornaments to family members, friends, workmates, etc.
My company also organize Christmas gift exchange every Christmas celebration. Sometimes, we will receive some very unique gifts because people like to create some excitement for each others.
I am looking forward the day to come, may I wish you and all your family members, friends and all readers happy Christmas.
A perfect hub Irohner and timely too... Unique attack initiated and you are indeed resourceful and very creative...

It seems that they will make a Christmas ornament out of anything these days... :)
very good hub. Love our ornaments. When my wife and I first got married 38 years ago I worked nights and she made all these handmade ones that we still use today. Thanks for sharing the info. Kerry
