Have you ever wondered what other people are doing in their backyards? Believe it or not there are a growing number of families and individuals that are using their backyards for anything but growing grass and flowers. In many areas customizing and designing themed backyards has become a thriving business. Although some of the backyards described below are fairly costly to create and maintain, their owners feel they are well worth the effort and have become a focal point of the home.

Some of the more unique backyard design options include:

Your own personal water park – What family with kids wouldn't love to have their own water park right in their backyard? These theme type yards go well beyond just a swimming pool with a diving board and a slide. These miniature sized water parks include a swimming pool, flowing water slide, family sized jetted pool and even a wave pool. Often there is a gazebo area for eating and a beautifully lush landscaped background to the water park area. The decking is often custom designed tile that is coordinated to match the house or the theme of the pool.

Miniature golf anyone? – Just image your very own miniature golf course right in your own yard. If you don't want to go for miniature golf, how about your own putting green for those private practice sessions. If you are a handyman or woman you may be surprised at how easy it is to create your own miniature golf course, however landscaping and leveling for the ground surface can require a bit of professional help. There is the option to use artificial turf on the golf course area to limit the care needed, with live grass on the edges of the yard along with plants, flowers and trees for added greenery.

Water gardens – adding a beautifully tranquil pond complete with koi, water plants and lovely paved or stone walkways and benches can change your backyard into an oasis of relaxation. You may also want to add a two-tiered pond with a stream running between the two levels and an automatic pumping system to keep water circulating. Soft lanterns and low benches along the pathways will add to the restful and relaxing atmosphere.

Xeriscaping – if you live in a dry climate consider working with natural flowers and plants to create a xeriscape garden and yard that requires little or no supplemental watering. Use natural crushed stone or gravel instead of grass for the larger part of the yard and place natural drought resistant plants such as succulents and cactus throughout the area in small and large clusters. Use natural rock and stones as added features to groups of plants. Metal sculptures and native artwork tend to be used in the decoration of xeriscape gardening.

Planning a unique backyard does take a bit of work and effort, but it really makes your home a special place and not only adds value but also personal pleasure.
