Parrots don’t talk using their tongues as they don’t have a voice box like we do. They have two air sacks at the sides of their necks and chest which they manipulate to mimic the sounds they like.

Giraffes spend almost all of their lives standing up. They even give birth while standing and their newborn falls to the ground. Then the baby giraffe is up and running by it’s mothers side in under 14 hours

Crows have been known to use traffic to crack nuts, use curved sticks to get food at the bottom of a hollow tube and scare barnyard animals for fun!



Gorillas, Chimpanzees and Bonobos can learn and communicate in sign language. When released back into their family groups they will even teach other what they have learn’t and the new techniques will spread and become a part of their culture.

Very few animals can recognize themselves in a mirror like humans can. The animals that can recognize themselves include elephants, dolphins, magpies, gorillas and chimpanzees. Each of these animals have passed a scientific test designed to see if an animal can notice a mark on their face in the mirror.

A fossil has been found that suggests that hippopotamuses and whales may have a common ancestor.

African elephants are the largest land mammals on earth and the Asian elephant comes in second. Yet it is the Asian elephant which is more closely related to the prehistoric Mammoth which was much larger than the African elephant.

A Rhinoceros has the smelling abilities of a bloodhound. They can track each other by smell alone.

Everybody has heard that elephants have good memories. Did you know that they will also mourn a dead relative even years after their death. The following video shows a mourning ritual carried out by a group of elephants that have come across a long deceased love done.

These facts about animals and birds are very interesting. My mother used to have a Lhasa Apso dog that when groomed seemed to preen in front of a mirror apparently liking his image.

That is interesting--especially the elephants. I'm sure we're closer to the animals, or they're closer to us, than we think.
