Do You Love Going To The Movies?

There's something I just love about going to the movies! It's a combination of the big screens and the group setting, but getting out to a new movie right on the weekend when it opens really is something special.

Having a full movie house really does change how a movie is experienced. It's not just you laughing or jumping in your seat, it's dozens of people. Seeing the images in the size and format that the director intended also makes seeing films in theater different than at home.

I love watching movie trailers. After all, you can frequently tell if a movie is going to be good or not just based on the trailer. This hub will show trailers from movies opening this weekend, extending out for the next few months. My main criteria for picking them will be things I think look interesting and which should turn out to be good.

What's Up With Movie Reviews?

If there's one thing that seems to annoy or confuse movie viewers, it's movie reviews.  Some critics love a film, but then it seems like no one actually goes to see the movie.  A movie gets panned utterly by reviewers and then does gangbusters at the box office.  So, what is up with movie reviews?

The first thing to remember is that movies straddle a strange space between art and entertainment.  Think about it... do you call them "movies" or "films?"  Do you go to the cinema or the theater to watch them?  In the end, a reviewer winds up putting their own feelings and opinions into reviews, so if you read a movie critic who really like to sort through films to point out the ones that are art, you'll find that a lot of stuff that's just plain entertaining but not artistically-driven or morally ambitious will probably get less enthusiastic reviews.  A critic who looks at entertainment might be bored by deep attempts to communicate a moral message visually and will probably be more entertained by action sequences with explosions.

The trick is to find movie reviews done by people who share your approach to movies.  My mom really puts a lot of credence into what is said in the New York Times movie reviews.  I've learned that doesn't work so well for me and plenty of stuff the Times pans, I've enjoyed.  For myself, I've learned that the folks over at Ain't It Cool News seem to look at film more like I do and I've come to have faith in the various reviewers over there.

So, take the time to read a bunch of different movie reviewers and see whose writing style you like, whose visual sense you agree with and whose movie viewing tastes you can understand.  Then you can read movie reviews which will inform you much more accurately.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is Fantastic! I think both Coen Bros fans and those new to their film work will enjoy this one!

My best friend and I went and saw BALLS OF FURY this past weekend. It was really quite silly and we had a good time.

I caught Danny Boyle's SUNSHINE this past weekend. I really enjoyed this one! Lots of special effects, but a very strong character story, not just pretty pictures. Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans were both really good.

I saw HP and TOOTP last night, and we went for the IMAX version where you get the battle in the Dept of Mysteries in 3D! It was so worth it! This one was much darker and had a bit of a thriller pace to it. Definitely more mature and complex than the earlier films.

Since I last posted I managed to see Ocean's 13 and I liked it as a fun, crime caper. Great cinematography, and I loved Eddie Izzard as an addition in this installment.

I saw Spiderman 3 and thought it needed some tighter editing. And lose the dance number....

I saw POTC 3 and loved it! Having Calypso grow 50ft tall and then turn into crabs seemed anti-climactic after all the build up, otherwise, it rocked.

I think my rule for May is going to be that I can only eat popcorn for one meal per day.

I love movies. Shrek the Third, Fantastic Four, Spiderman 3 and The Simpsons all look very entertaining. Time to line up the baby sitter, although I think I'll take the girls to see Shrek.
