3 Common Types of Vacuum Cleaners Compared
If you're in the market for a new vacuum cleaner then you need to read this article. We're going to look at the three most common styles of vacuum and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
There are three main types of vacuum cleaners:
1. Canister
2. Upright
3. Central systems
Canister vacuums have the motor and collection compartment inside a main canister, with the hose and power head attached to it. These canisters are typically on wheels so they can be dragged around fairly easily.
Upright vacuums have all parts, from the power head to the collection bag, inside a single upright body. They generally have the power head at the bottom, and some sort of wheel or ball to guide it when you push it around.
Central vacuum systems are built right into your home, with a central unit that is usually places in your garage or basement, and outlets throughout the house where you connect the hose and tools.
Canister vacuums are more versatile than either of the other two when it comes to using them in tight places, or somewhere outside the house like in the car or on the deck. Because all the components are in one unit, the only limiting factor is the length of the power cord to plug them in.
They aren't as convenient as an upright vacuum, or even central systems in some cases, since it's generally more work to pull them out for small clean-ups.
Upright vacuums are more convenient for small jobs since they are completely self-contained. They generally have less power than comparable canister or central systems, however, so they aren't as effective for large cleanups.
Central systems are easier to deal with because you only have to move the hose, not the entire unit. But because they are in a fixed location, with outlets in specific places throughout the house, they are not as versatile as either of the other two when it comes to using them in unusual places.
