The name lavender comes from the Latin root lavare , which means "to wash." Appropriately, most of the uses for lavender oil involve some sort of cleaning. Lavender most likely earned this name because it was originally used in baths to help purify the body and spirit. Through my years of practicing yoga, one of my goals has always been to bring balance to my body, mind and spirit, and lavender oil has proven to be quite effective in helping me to reach this goal. There are no less than a dozen uses for lavender oil.

Most people will tell you that a calm mind is easier to focus than a chaotic one. Having a calm, focused mind is important for yoginis, as well as everyone else too I would argue, and one of the qualities of lavender oil is that its aroma is very soothing. It can be used to treat headaches, depression, anxiety and stress. The soothing aroma of lavender oil is also effective in treating insomnia.

Though it is not common knowledge, lavender oil also has antiseptic and antifungal properties. It is used to treat various skin conditions like acne, eczema wrinkles, and psoriasis. Furthermore, it promotes the formation of scar tissue which speeds up the healing of cuts and burns, sunburns too! As if that wasn't enough, this versatile oil has been shown to boost the immune system via aromatherapy, as well as combat respiratory diseases.

The last use I will mention for lavender oil is my most favorite one. For all intents and purposes, laundry detergent is soap for your clothes. I've already mentioned lavender's use as a cleansing agent, but when you use it as an ingredient in laundry detergent, it becomes very potent. Not only will you clean your clothes, but you'll get the many benefits I've already mentioned. Additionally, since lavender is all natural, it's great for the environment, unlike the many harsh chemicals found in today's popular commercial detergents. Unfortunately, this particular use for lavender oil is not yet widespread, but with you help it can be! I highly recommend the incorporating lavender oil into your life. You won't regret it.
