venus rising: the top 10 sex symbols of all time!

venus rising from the foam by Botticelli

Do not blame Botticelli for starting the trend, he merely put into picture what has bothered, bewitched and bewildered men for ages! And not just the men, of course. They have been called sexpots, sex kittens, sex sirens, vamps, babes and even Eves of destruction. But whatever you may wish to call them, remember to use a little imagination. So for all of those who have been at one point kept warm by their beloved wall pinups, or desktop wallpaper, this one's for you. (with special mention to my friends goldentoad: always keep your cool; jugglingcroutons: try to have fun :D)

Clara Bow

The silent films she came out in did not silence her sex appeal and vivacious personality. Aside from popularizing the "flapper" look, she was also known as the first "It" girl.

there she goes: The Plastic Age (1925)

Jean Harlow

That strong screen presence and, of course, that platinum blonde hair, led her to be christened the "blonde bombshell". Though she became popular as a comedienne her brassy personality only hyped up her magnetic appeal.

there she goes: Platinum Blonde (1931)

Rita Hayworth

Listed as one of the greatest stars of all time by the American Film Institute, she was the top pinup girl for servicemen everywhere during the 1940s. Femme fatale was first used to describe Ms hayworth. She was also known as the "love goddess."

there she goes: Gilda (1946)

Marilyn Monroe

The first sex symbol to have reached iconic status, her mostly "dumb blonde" roles only heightened her apeal to the masses. She puts the O in oomph and inrtoduced another form of singing. It's called cooing.

there she goes: The Seven-Year Itch (1955)

Brigitte Bardot

And God created Brigitte! Long before her activism, she started a French revolution of a different kind during the 50s and 60s. She was so hot that at one point she was considered "too risqué" in the US.

there she goes: And God Created Woman (1956)

Ursula Andress

The sex siren also popularly known as Honey Ryder - once James Bond's object of desire. She is included in Empire magazine's list of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history. Not bad.

there she goes: Dr No (1962)

Bo Derek

The rating scale was modified from 1-100 to 1-10 when she, er, traipsed along the shore - slow motion was never used to much wider appreciation than during that moment. And Who wants to count to a hundred when you can achieve perfection with 10?

there she goes: 10 (1979)

Madonna

Apparently, Like a Virgin was an analogy to it being her breakthrough hit. Not! She first inrtoduced the concept that sex is power. So to some men, sex could also mean another F word - yes, frightening.

there she goes: Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)

Pamela Anderson

All the fear caused by movies such as Jaws was erased when she became a lifeguard on Baywatch. Suddenly, life is full of S's - sun. sand and you know what.

there she goes: Barb Wire (1996)

Angelina Jolie

Lest you be distracted by her humanitarian work, please be reminded that she consistently lands on "sexiest" or "most beautiful" lists" everywhere. And she's got tattoos!

there she goes: Tomb Raider movies (2001/2003)

Nice picture, Cris. It brings back memories of the old black and white movies I used to watch in my younger years! Also, I admire your introduction. It was well written and highly appealing.

Yeah, I was shocked to see my name up there. For a second, I felt we were twelve years old and we were sneaking out back to the tool shed with a bunch of playboys and if anybody came you didn't want to be caught alone, that if we were going to get a whooping, its better to go down as a team!

thought you would appreciate it. And it would come in handy - keep in mind the pictures above when you go to the war zone aka the mall! LOL you'll be the coolest cat if there ever was one! :D

Hi Cris, I am a big admirer of Marilyn Monroe, but with the pictures above, I would have to go with Bo Derek, Pamela Anderson, and Lgali.

Shirley Anderson profile image

I'm not a guy, but I think Marilyn Munroe, Bridgette Bardot and Rita Hayworth were the best of the "oldies" and Angelina of the new set of sex symbols.

Cris, your vid isn't working.

They are an English band from Bristol though they named themselves after a nearby town. They make mostly triphop music and their debut "Dummy' was included in Rolling Stone's greatest 500 albums of all time. :D

Great hub, Cris. Lots of interesting choices through the years. Reminds me of the poster that Andy Dufraine puts up on his prison cell wall in The Shawshank Redemption. If you haven't seen the film, rent it ASAP. You'd enjoy it.

Thanks NYLady. As for the movie, I've seen Shawshank Redemption and I do remember the poster in the cell, it's Rita Hayworth! Good thing she's in my list. :D

Oh wow - that took me down Memory Lane! OK - I'm not a guy so I'm not ogling but there was something about those heroines that enthralled. I'm wondering if it was just the fact that were younger!

Cris A  says:

we all have room for nostalgia and sentimentality in our hearts. as for your being enthralled, well, they wouldn't be called enchantresses for nothing! IHa-ha Thanks for passing by end enjoying the pictures :D

PS I notice the pink streaks in your pic! Nice!

I dont know what it id but i really love the iconic babes from yesterday:)

M. Monroe was my ultimate favorite too!

I think its their being unreachable, being in the distant past and all that, that lends them an almost mythical quality that makes us in awe of them. And nobody cooed like Marilyn. remember "happy birthday Mr President..." :D

Joss Braun  says:

I like your tribute Cris, but I think your list needs a little diversity....how about Ms. Eartha Kit, Dorothy Dandrige, Leana Horne, Josephine Baker, also Ms. Hallie Berry and Angela Bassett.  You can't tell me that those beautiful, cool, chocolate sex symbols don't make your red blood run hot.

Cris A profile image

Cris A  says:

They sure do! Next time i'll try to, as you put it, diversify. But I'm still glad that you like this little tribute! Thanks for dropping by :D

Was it just coinsidence that they're names sounds so sexy? I like Angelina Jolie a lot. I never got to know some of them since they were famous before my time. I saw Rita Hayworth on a poster in Shawshank Redemtion movie. L.O.L

Cris A profile image

Cris A  says:

I don't think so, most of them got "real" names. Some were given screen names that would go better with their image - like for example Marilyn Monroe for Norma Jean Baker. :D

Peter Dickinson profile image

Sorry you missed Garbo out Cris. A mysterious woman who on first impressions is certainly not beautiful but watch any of her movies and you will be in love with her by the end. Definiely a sex symbol.

My list would be different...all mens would. I think the most beautiful girl I ever saw and dated I met on Adriatico street. She would be my personal sex symbol but would not make the list.

Enjoyed the Hub. Thanks

I love Garbo, i've a collection of her movies, but for me she's more than a sex symbol - i've made another hub about her, along Bette Davis - Women I Love I called it.

So you've been to Malate! And apparently you have more than enjoyed your stay! Thanks for dropping by :D

Elena. profile image

Another great collection! And talk about eye candy! Laugh! Your photo captions are great, too! Did you give any thought to Marlene Dietrich when compiling this hub? Just curious :-)

Cris A profile image

Cris A  says:

Actually I did think of Dietrich and Garbo but I sort of picked only one per decade - and decided on those who were "conventionally" known as sex symbols. I concur that Dietrich oozed with sex appeal but there's something more about her and it would be a disservice if I labled her as such. She's an enigma :D

Elena. profile image

Elena.  says:

Isn't she though?! Since you've got such a knack for lists maybe you could do the hub world a good favor by posting a list of top 10 mysterious, enigmatic women! :-)

NDBEES -

I'm not sure what you mean? But if you mean why there is no married sex symbol well then most sex symbols who got married soon retired the image :D

Elena

Yes I already have two! Now 8 more to go! LOL thanks again for the suggestion :D
