Verbal Analogies Practice Test
79
Verbal analogies are generally of the following form:
Clock is to time as thermometer is to:
(a.) temperature
(b.) degrees
(c.) weather
(d.) centigrade
.
The analogy question test the ability to see a relationship between two words or symbols and to apply this relationship to another set of words or symbols.
It is essentailly a test of the ability to detect the exact nature of relationship. Many people, rather than examining the relationship, tend to use word association in their answer. One way to determine the best answer to an analogy question is to think of a word or phrase that links the first two words.
Let us look at the example above :
A clock measures time; a thermometer measures temperature; hence temperature is the correct alternative.
Verbal analogy questions usually apperas in all levels of verbal ability, the important thing to remember is there is often more than one possible answer but you are looking for the word which best complete the analogy.

Quizzes like these are real tricky, good for developing one's reasoning.
The verbal analogies test was a major part of the MENSA test. The connections got increasingly obscure. I did not do well on it. Thanks for the practice sites!
