When people think of virus protection, they usually only think of their computer. However, any device you connect and transfer data to or from can get infected by viruses, transfer them back to the computer and wreck havoc. Most people neglect their peripheral devices, like iPods and MP3 players, thinking they are safe from harm.

There are two simple ways to protect your MP3 player from viruses. The first way is for those who download legally usable music, via CD or through a vendor like iTunes. When you do this, those CDs and downloads are safe for you to transfer to your device. These services provide you with the safest form of music you can transfer to your iPod, MP3 player or other music device.

The second way is to virus scan any music you download. If you are using a program like DC++ or Limewire, or engaging in otherwise dubious downloads, scanning with anti-virus software is the only way to ensure those files are safe. You should already be taking precautions if you are opting to download music this way. Play it safe and scan the files, folders or another data before transferring it. Otherwise, you may find yourself with a fake song that is holding a virus, Trojan or other threat.

Why take the chance with your MP3 player by not taking all the steps you can to protect it? Taking virus protection seriously for every device that connects to your computer is essential to keep everything safe and secure. If you get a virus on your MP3 player and neglect it, once you connect it back to your computer chances are your system will get reinfected. Take the time to protect your MP3 player by running virus scans on anything you put on it before you ruin not only your device but your computer, too.
