Think over this before it takes away your business
VoIP security concerns for confidential business calls: Unfortunately, new technologies used with the Internet like VoIP and other systems bring with them security concerns and threats and then arises the need for details to consider regarding safety of total infrastructure in order to protect important voice and other data calls which are highly confidential to us. It has to be done in a manner so that no call gets leaked or manipulated by the attacker. Network devices, operating systems, servers phones, mobiles, software, and protocols are all vulnerable. Information and content of voice in each and every call is really valuable to us and our organization, whether it is a business meeting call using Internet protocols or you are just talking to a highly confidential client via VoIP, every business call is important to us.
For example, a signal on a highly compromised server can be used to manage and configure confidential business calls with a list of outgoing and incoming calls and their durations and parameters. Using this info, an attacker can easily obtain a very well detailed map of all the business calls made on the network and can create recordings of conversations held and can copy user’s calling and receiving data and can easily transmit all the conversations happening via technologies like VoIP on the web.
In this new world of technology, security systems have to be very powerful because hackers and attackers who hack confidential data have also become much more advanced than before. Nowadays, any type of conversation is at a risk on a compromised network and the most obvious target is the Voice Over IP network. For example, by getting an entry into the key part of an infrastructure such as VoIP gateway, an attacker can easily capture and reassemble voice data packets in order to listen to a business call or conversation.
Calls on Internet are highly vulnerable to kidnapping
In these types of cases, an attacker can easily intercept a connection and can change parameters of a call and this attack that can cause significant damage because the victim is not able to notice any change in the calls and unaware of the attacker’s movement. Nowadays, there are various techniques used by attackers such as call forwarding and identity theft, making data integrity a great risk for users of VOIP and other phones used via net.
The vast availability of Voice Over IP networks is the main sore point. In the traditional lines that were PSTN, availability was rarely a problem but in voice over internet protocol, a sudden loss of power can easily cause our network to become compromised which makes it much more easier for the attacker to hack the VoIP network. One common effect of these types of attacks is denial of service. If a hacker or attacker addresses the key points of our compromised network, he/she could even completely destroy possibility of communicating through voice or data.

Phones and servers using protocols like VOIP appear small and simple elements but are based on computers with software installed, and as you already know, any software is susceptible to attack just like any personal computer or operating system, which can be easily become available to an intruder. Some codes can be inserted in the system to configure many types of harmful actions.
So in brief, the harmful consequences involved with using the VoIP network is just like what is available in standard IP networks.

Thanks a lot Mr. Roychoudhury. I also thank Sandeep, our office's network engineer, and my cousin Jatin Soni, Telecom Engineering Student" for helping me in learning about voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and virtual provider network (VPN), information on which I will publish in my upcoming hubs. I will learn more things on new technologies for security with them in the meantime.
Wow soni2006! Thanks so much for bringing to our attentoin that although the advancements made in technology have made our lives much easier, there are risks that come along with them. This will help us become more cautious.
Good information, soni! Looking forward to your next hub on VOIP security solutions.
Not sure soni2006, I'm actually tending to the belief that the internet is more paranoid than it should be and alarm bells and security threats are mostly unjustified as it is extremely difficult for hackers. As I understand it from my programming experience (limited) doing a tracking site, hackers must use "brute force" which means massive checking processes to "hack" passwords etc... This is not easy and it beats me how you can be in conversation with someone while at the same time someone else is listening to your VOIP packets unless there is a delay being made between answer and response. But thanks for this hub, you've got me thinking, it would be interesting to find out more about the VOIP protocol and technical details of how this could be possible, if in fact it was.
Thanks Soni for creating hubs on VOIP! It's good to have the info all in one central location rather than having to search all over the internet for it. I can tell you've put a lot of time into the hubs you have done on this subject.
You're always rich in knowledge about technology. Thanks for sharing.
good hub. The alternatives to Vonage are from a 2007 article and Vonage has good pricing and now many countries are FREE. I tried packet 8 and that was horrible. My brother had Vonage and loved it. I may give them a chance since their international is FREE for some countries.
Thanks a lot Veronica, Beth, psychic, Money Glitch, and agusfanani, and ocbill for your comments and support. I have published a new hub on how to secure our confidential business information while using Voip. Have a look in my profile.
