One of the easiest and best ways to redecorate a kid room is through the creative use of wall treatments. The reason is that a little color, pattern and texture goes a long way to creating a whole new look and you don’t have to spend or change a lot in order to make a big difference.

Today I'm going to discuss practical and inexpensive ways to add character and fun to your child’s room with paint and other creative wall treatments like wallpaper and decorative borders. Most of the ideas I share are not only cost effective but should be easy enough to do yourself.

The best way to start is find some inspiration by browsing print or online books, magazines and catalogues for treatment ideas. If you don’t plan on redecorating very often you’ll want to steer clear of super trendy colors, fabrics and wallpaper patterns. To be on the safe side, it’s best to stick with preferred colors and classic motifs and avoid fads altogether.

It’s also important to consider both the maintenance and durability of any products you select. The last thing you want to do is buy something just because it looks good. Any paint, wallpaper, fabric or flooring should be durable enough to withstand what a typical child can dish out.

Let’s start with wall treatments. You can approach your child’s walls in one of two ways – you can decorate to make a bold statement or your can treat the walls as a backdrop to the furnishings in the room.

If you want to bring the entire space to life consider using bold colors or patterns. On the other hand, if you want to highlight the beauty of antique or built-in furniture select a subtle palette.

It’s amazing how a little paint or wallpaper or a combination of the two can turn an ordinary room into an extraordinary one. Two creative techniques are to add a frieze (a band that is positioned on the top portion of the wall near the ceiling line) or create a chair rail using a decorative border.

Another great idea is to paint the top half of the wall and then install wallpaper on the bottom half.

Nice hub! A nice look we did in our rooms is one color of paint on the top, another color on the bottom, and a border in the middle. It always looks cool. Thanks for you tips!
