Warning

This topic deserves a series of "Quality" hubs. Unfortunately, I do not have time to do this justice. Somebody has irked my goat, stirred my beans. So the goat must be allowed to roam and I must air my flatulence.

This hub is has been written in responce to a few comments on my hub, Bake a Cake for cindy, which was directly related to the hub, When Big Brother is a Block Head, by cindyvine.

The comments that spawned this rant were about Walmart.  I couldn't agree with them more.

What do Americans have to do with Human Rights in China?

Can we be blamed? Yes, you can blame every American who shops at Walmart and Sam's club.

China has a horrible Authoritarian regime. When our country places value of cheap goods over human rights, we are in fact supporting these gross human rights violations.

With the aid of the our government, they close down American companies who cannot meet the prices that these companies are willing to pay for the goods. They will help companies ship the production overseas, and our government will give them tax breaks for doing so.

This is killing our economy, but oh well, as long as we can buy a new flat screen tv for under $200, and shoes for $19, we are too distracted to do what the Chinese Students in Tienanmen Square tried to do. The new G2 phones will come free with a two year contract before you know it; then we will have lots of toys.

All of these toys are great, but let us not get distracted from what is going on around the world and in our own back yards.  We are given distractions all of the time, to keep our eyes off the ball.

Meanwhile, the price of chicken doubled when gas prices were high, so we are too busy trying to feed our families to worry about that. Hell I couldn’t afford the chicken if I had to pay for American or European shoes, so who cares? I mean it was over there. Never mind there is Lead in the baby formula, my “Chinese” made baby crib has lead and will fall apart with my baby in it. The eyes of the stuffed animal might come off and choke them, but if the kids just swallow the button, they won’t absorb too much lead if they did not chew on them first. Toxic subataces in clothes?

Inside a Walmart Store in China

By shopping at these companies, you are supporting gross human rights violations, environmental pollution, anti democracy, hurting the American economy, killing more U.S. jobs, you are against workers rights in every country that Walmart does business with including China, Mexico and USA. You are supporting the governments overthrow of our country (of the People). Tax breaks for them, laws that make you “useable”.

We (America) started shipping American jobs overseas by telling companies they will be taxed heavily if they don’t, then (using American tax dollars) coming up with a plan, finding them a place for a factory and then giving them tax breaks showing them how much they would save by shipping their jobs overseas, during the Reagan-Bush administration.

At that time, Walmart was using "Buy American" as their slogan. Now Walmart is responsible for over 10% of China's Exports.  Sure some of their items are the cheapest, but you can find many of the items at Walmart as cheap or cheaper elsewhere. Did you know that? See for yourself. Many major retail chains have what you are looking for at the same or lower price. Try a farmers market for food and thrift stores if you must save every penny.

The chain reaction to shopping at Walmart will probably eventually hit you at your job, (unless you are a "high up" in our government) . Then what will you do?

This is not just some political granola eating, tree hugging, anti corporate rant. People are dying. People are getting put out of work. Governments would rather help to Walmart than to you.

Soon china will have all of the jobs, and we will become dependent upon them. Then you will work 7 days a week for little food. Health care will be handed out on a “profitability” basis. Are you worth getting better? It will probably be cheaper to let you die. Is this the world you want for your children and grand children?

World Wide Problem

And for my overseas friends, Walmart will affect you as well. You are all tied to America’s economy. Walmart will be invading a town or village near you soon, if not already. Perhaps you will be working 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week for $3 like the Chinese at Walmart’s factories.

ASDA in the UK is Walmart.Yes,it is.

Rant away. It's pretty good. This is the kind of stuff that makes me sick to my stomach. Unfortunately, the town I live in is pretty much Walmart-dependant. Being so close to Bentonville, Arkansas, most of our area is. There are, I think, 2 Targets in surrounding towns, but a Walmart on every corner.

I'm more of one who likes to support the 'little man' and family owned businesses around town. I know what I'm spending there is going directly to feed the kids my children play with.

I support the little man too. I think he's cute ;). I can't take Walmart. I really can't. I only bought something there once and I regretted it because I found it at Target the next day for 10 dollars less. (Remember Z's remote control gift). Can't do Sam's either. Just can't. My mom swears by it and I cringe every time she comes into town because she's so frickin stubborn. Argh! I just won't go. Won't do it. I may accompany you there if you're my friend and you must, but I'm not buying anything.

Betsylckes- Glad to meet you.  Yes they do.

Hawkesdream- Many of their items are the cheapest, but you are correct, many are not.

Alekhouse- and the way they treat their employees!   It is degrading and embarrassing.  Walgreens fortunately is not owned by them.

Gypsy Willow- Walmart is a big one on the whole china thing, (and the whole evil Walmart thing too) but it is hard to find things made outside of china.  Some of the better companies will treat the factory workers better, but many do not.  I think my boss is a Chinese Walmart type employer  :(

Ethel- Primark!  That must be one of the ones I could not remember.  Thx.

Ixxy- if you could dig up a link for that it would be great!   :)

Sandman- the human rights issue is beyond horrifying.

Tony- if you have a Lowes (not quite a mom and pop) they are much more customer oriented.

Peggy- They actively try to shut down mom and pop.  They probably got their house too through “eminent  domain” as well.  Hundreds of people in my town had their houses torn down forcibly due to WallyWorld seducing our local officials.  They said our taxes would go down.  They went up so that we could pay the subsidy.

You are preaching to the choir with me--we haven't shopped at Walmart for years, and when we meet people who do we go through all of this for them, just so they know what they are choosing.

I'll be honest with you--most of them say, "I don't care. They are cheapest and my family comes first, so I buy what is cheapest." So basically, Walmart shoppers are idiots. I hate to be like that, but if you lay it all out patiently AND PROVE that 1) they aren't cheapest, and 2) Walmart is HURTING your family not helping it and here's why--if you lay that all out in facts and you still get, "I don't care. Walmart is cheapest," then you have to conclude you are dealing with some kind of brain damage there.

People have no idea how bad this is going to get. It really scares me. And now, we're starting to get the violence. Good hub. good rant.

It is not just Walmart. It's the whole greed thing of the coporate world. And Sam Walton just used the Buy American thing as a ploy. He was already involved in the China thing way before he died. His son went to college here in Wooster and is astute in these prctices. They are very agressive. And another thing is that the money going into China is also going into their War machine. I see nothing but more of the same in our future and next it will be Africa doing the same thing with our jobs. It all started you know with Japan. Remember those days? We all complained about their products too, now it is China and next it will be Africa.

Walmart has its issues, but did you know that I find more American made products at Walmart than I do at Target.  You can buy American made beads, laundry detergent, and food at Walmart.  At Target by and large a great deal of products I was looking for on a certain day were made in China, except for the food I bought there.  Yes Walmart has the poor CEO track record, but when it comes to buying products you have to look at where these are made.

At Walmart you can actually find a lot of throw rugs and mats made in the US, and even picture frames made here too.  On a search of Target many of these same products were made in China.  I do not have lots of money to shop anyway, but whether I shop at Walmart or Target I am primarily interested if I can find a product made in the US, and not which store I am buying it at.

At the time they were bought out, I was unaware. However - not long after they did, a documentary aired (think it was on BBC) regarding Walmarts deplorable labour exploitation, shipping and tax evasions ... etc etc. Not to mention the profit the company were making ...

I stopped shopping there. It made me sick. No doubt somewhere in the chain I'm still paying someone to do the same or similar but where I can or have the knowledge - I chose not to participate.

And don't get me started on the virtual monopoly China has on the steel trade :|

Pgrundy- this seems to be the common denominator in America.  They just don’t care.  This is how our country will be over thrown.

Ralwus- YOU’RE A BALD WOMAN! ! !  At least with japan you got some decent quality.  China with it’s toxic baby formula and “Lead” in products like children’s side walk chalk (the list could go on for hours) is getting to be too much.  Also Japan was not a totalitarian war machine.  I am sure as soon as they can figure out how to protect their product, Africa will be next.

Ivorwen- I enjoy my American built Toyota.  Quality engineered.  Not all made in America is good.  The Unions and crappy engineering at the auto industries are driving several of the big ones under.  And this after we shelled out billions to save them.  (that should be a group of hubs alone)

SweetiePie-Made in china is only part of the issue with Walmart.  Soon everyone will be working for minimum wage if this monster keeps rolling.  They treat their American workers like dirt.  They use government subsidies (Largest most powerful profitable company around? ? ?  Hello?  Why do my tax dollars go to them?)  and then with their profits, they move in to small rural communities, pricing things below cost, (which is already low do to their buying power) to put all of the small businesses out of business.  Then they raise the prices to what they want.  You loose jobs, you loose options, you get force fed into the machine.  They move into your neighborhood, “Tax Free”, you pay for the roads and traffic signals with your tax money, your taxes actually go up as well as they throw people out of their houses using eminent domain.  You are not worth anything as a citizen. The deeper you look, the more offended you should be.  But as pgrundy said..

Frogdropping- I am astonished to add “Frog Labor” to the long list of labor abuses.  :O

Paper Moon,

I do not like Walmart's practices, but did you know the truth is Target is not much better.  I did some deep digging today and found an article that shows people love to have a corporate box company that they hate (people always like to have someone to complain about), and Wal-Mart is the guy because he is big business.  Target is guilty of many of the same infractions, but they are the smaller game in town and often use the hatred towards Wal-Mart as part of their PR campaign.  I am a smart cookie with deep think tank skills, and everything pgrundy has said Wal-Mart I have heard before.  She is a smart lady and does her research, but what no one was pointing out here is Target is just as bad really.

If you really want to help the local economy shop at your local union stores and shop less.  Also, buying US made products really does help, and the bigger corporations stores will remain as long as people continue to frequent these, especially since quite a few thing Target is less benign. We are not going to change the trend and now that Wal-Mart is the only game in town in rural communities they are often forced to shop there. Where else are they going to shop? If you are forced to shop at Wal-Mart at least buy American made when you can.

If I must shop at one buying American is the way to go, and I have done a great deal of research and thought this through.  I just happen to have a divergent opinion, but I am standing by it.

Just like the author of the first article you linked to, SweetiePie, I would chose Target over Walmart.  She supports that very well, thanks for that link.

That said, I'd shop a smaller mom and pop specialty shop or a local farmers market whenever possible, and it usually is 99% of the time.  Especially when one considers the amount of time they spend in one of those big stores, it equals or balances, the going to the neater comfier local shops and markets.

Too tired to read the other one, it's rather long winded and goes all over the place, will get to that one later.

The second article is very good and well researched, but the first article also shows Target is not much better. Even though the first author says she will shop at Target, we see both are not very good. These days I think both Walmart and Target are bad if we have to be realistic about it. I honestly shop at the local grocery store more anyway. I stand by my position.

Well, I've never come across any autrocities as horendous as Walmart's. And my tax dollars don't literally go to Target like they do to Walmart, a place I will never buy anything from or support in any way. And Target has never literally forced my friends to abandon their apartments and homes with nowhere else to go. I'm speaking from personal experience here. Targets issues are so miniscule, (i'm not excusing them) that they're a flickable bugar compared to Walmart.

At any rate, I love the mom and pop shops, restaurants, and markets around here, so that's where I go anyway most of the time. I'm glad you don't support either.

Why thank you sweetiepie. I appreciate the links. Any information is good. I am not an advocate of target, but as your article (link) stated, Walmart is by far the larger transgressor and it did not touch on 1/4th of Walmart bad practices. It also seemed to be a bit of a pro union article raving about how target attempts to shut down unions. The second article also seemed to be from a union standpoint. This is by no means the same bag. I have issues with how unions are ran nowadays. The newest store my that my company has opened is forced by the local government to use union workers for any painting, construction, or electrical work. We pay up to 5 times as much for union work. It also tends to be done 5 times slower. The quality of work seems no better. It is hit or miss on how well the job is done. Unions have also shut down the car industry in America. Why pay more for a car, that lasts half as long? I know several people who worked at Chrysler and have heard many insane stories of things that they could get away with because they were union.

From my own findings, Target does use minimum wage workers for management level tasks. Many mom and pop stores also pay minimum wage and could not even think of affording “Good” healthcare for their employees. Target, Macys, Circuit City and most other large corporate stores use goods made in sweatshops. . There are many places that mistreat their employees. My local area has two local ”chain” grocery stores. I have serious issues with them as well. The price of a family pack of chicken breasts (just for example) has more than doubled during the last “Gasoline Crisis”. This is funny as some of the smaller stores have not changed their price, they remain the same, and though the gas crisis is gone, the price remains almost un affordable. But I digress. Walmart is evil. It is all about the profit. They are not the only ones. I have not touched on much of the problem; it would be more like a book. The fact is I refuse to shop there, and hope anyone with any care look deeper into the matter and do the same.

Well, the truth is, corporations across the board are driving down wages and demanding ridiculous levels of productivity from lower tier employees, not just in big box stores. WalMart is one of the more egregious offenders, but working retail in general these days is no picnic. (Not like it ever was, but I think it's much worse now.) No one should ever die on a retail job like the guy who got trampled at Christmas. That's insane.

I had a job for six weeks at Christimas time for a merchandising firm, stocking videos and magazines at Meijer stores. At first I was pretty happy to get the job because I'd had a job like that when my kids were small, and it was straightforward and simple--Just put the new stuff on the shelves, take the old stuff off.

But it quickly became obvious that the company had squeezed what was once a full-time sales rep job with benefits into a 15-hour per week hourly job with no benefits. They routinely required scads of work off the clock, mostly paperwork and computer work. This used to be a rep's job, not a merchandiser's job. Merchandisers deal with merchandising, reps do all the paperwork and computer crap.

The company had very recently bought up several other smaller companies and nobody ever seemed to know what was going on. Meanwhile, the Meijer cashiers had just fallen victim to a time-study quota policy and had to maintain a ridiculous pace or be fired--they couldn't even talk to customers while they checked out. Everybody was always busy but nothing ever seemed to get done and there was lots of chaos. That merchandising company is already bankrupt. The mergers and acquisitions that preceded the bankruptcy were almost certainly just a shuffle to make somebody at the top a wad of money before it all collapsed from inefficiency and confusion.

This is what is happening behind the scenes and people don't realize it. Things are falling apart in a major way, breaking down. WalMart will likely survive but that won't be a good thing. A country full of WalMart employees won't be buying cars or much of anything else.

Even thought Target is not as large yet and there policies may not be quite as bad, many rural communities have given tax breaks for Targets to come to their town, but do not do the same thing for Wal-Mart just because of its image.  My point is Target may be a prettier package, but it still displaces local mom and pop stores by encouraging people to shop there instead.

Target's human rights policies are not much better than Walmart, and the truth is they do use the the big guy's PR image to bolster their own.  Overall Target may be slightly better, but I think there is something truly to be said for supporting local workers and buying American at all costs.

What scares me more than Wal-Mart or even Target is the burgeoning of 99 cent stores, and this has become such a problem in our area that one city put a freeze on building anymore for one year. 99 cent stores are notorious for selling discounted products, the majority of which are made in China.

Yes all corporations have their evil side, but there is still a need for people to have a good guy and a bad guy.  To some extent Walmart is the bad guy because people want someone to hate, and Target is the good guy because of its PR image.

Yes, I am pro union because I know many people that work for local groceries stores, which pay a living wage and have better conditions, something where Target and Wal-Mart fall far short.  Some may say well mom and pop stores do not pay a living wage etc, but working conditions in such an establishment would not be as bad as Walmart or Target.

Also, if someone wants to shop at Walmart or Target, and I do from time to time, it is far more helpful to American workers to purchase US made products.  If you go through your house and see how many things are made in China- the truth is no matter what store you are buying these items from this is still helping to support their economy and displace our workers.

Better yet, I choose to support union stores here in California because in our state being paid a living wage is vital for rent and living expenses.

I can tell you feel strongly about this issue! ;-) We've stopped going there a long time ago – not only to boycott a corrupt corporate system that fails its employees and their basic needs (such as for medical coverage), but also because I can literally not breathe when making my way through a giant store in which everyone is rushed and only focused on the bottom line. While I strongly, strongly prefer and support local stores (the smaller, the better), many families I know insist they cannot afford to shop elsewhere. Let's face it – if you have a choice to make between feeding and clothing your kids and making a statement, you will probably choose to take care of your kids. If you haven't yet, you might want to read Barbara Ehrenreich's “Nickel and Dimed” – that will get your blood boiling just a little. Thought-provoking hub, thanks.

Zollstock- Glad to make your acquaintance. I went into a super Walmart once. It did carry a suffocating vibe. And yes, my kids are my highest “Value”. This is why I put up with the bull at my present job. If I did not have kids, they would not have gotten my soul. Thank you for the book suggestion.

Teresa- Bad bad girl! Shame on you. LOL. It is hard to find anything not made in china. Thankfully my Japanese car was built in North Carolina using mostly American made parts.

Christine alamaraz- Hi. I can not believe the stupidity of the “Herd” mentality. I just cannot envision something so senseless or horrible.

Joy- I am sorry to hear that your friend lost 2/3rd s of his small business to them. Many people do not care until they are personally affected in ways they can see. Meanwhile, the monster grows. I sat through one of the most horrible movies ever made. It was based on the premise that smart people had no kids or one kid, the dumbest people had lots of kids, so in 3 generations the IQ average in the world dropped to some astronomically low number. Any ways, the movie was as dumb as the future generation, but had a good point. Walmart was a city.

I can't help myself paper moon I enjoyed this rant very much and it reminded me of two things. The first is a documentary called "Walmart The High Cost Of Low Prices" and the other is this delicious bit of satire

The movie above "paper moons propoganda" was to have had clips from "Walmart, the high cost of low prices". I down loaded the clips and all, but was too tired to make it and too impatient to post to wait untill I had time. After all, I was on a rant! LOL. Will check your satire link. Thanks.

This is just another reason to add to my "why I refuse to go to Wal-Fart", It controls the economy is areas like mine where there are not that many choices. No Target, only Belks. It's convenient to buy chicken wings, get a prescription filled, but a new plant and potting soil while your oil is being changed, but I prefer the opposite. The prices here are higher that 50 miles away where the population doubles. They have us just where they want us, dependent.

Well, gee. this is only my second post on the whole hub pages site and I am brand new..but about to get myself in trouble.

So let me just jump in with both feet. this is a good hub, and you have very valid points. I was a manager of Walmart  until about three days ago.. Walmart is guilty  of a lot of what you have said. They will build a walmart on the othr side of town away from downtown to pull business from downtown, and that is an issue. They do not support the abuse of human rights.

Now I have had the honor of working for both companies, Target has serious integrity problems, so does Walmart. At this point there isn't a single member of the Walton family lett in the organzation, the dream has died. the company where it used to be people oriented is now money orientated. interestingly enough the top peopleat Walmart now  are all from Target, as you can tell with the blue and kakkhi uniforms now.

And Target is slipping under the wire headed for bankruptcy.

Walmart does give back to the community, and it doesn't support human rights violations, it just chooses not to see them :)

The bottom line is this: Money.

People shop Walmart, if  they didn't walmart would close/ but eveyday we were ringing up 500,000 dollars in business, my store made a hundred million dollars last year..if you want changes one or two of you can't boycott you have to hurt them werre they care in the pocketbook...

As long as people shop, Walmart lives.

Dori- I am sorry to hear they have you against the wall. LOL.

It's Angel- Thank you for posting your 2nd here. I am honored. I am sure that they don't actively support human rights violations, as in, "Oh look, lets stick it to the little people in china, I wonder if we can get this factory to not give them any breaks on their 14 hour shifts 7 days a week". "HEy, lets be sure to buy General Tso a few new tanks to quell the protests for his Christmas bonus". But if they choose not to see, they are still supporting.

I hope you have found gainful employment elsewhere.

Imported Chinese workers are taking over here in Trinidad. Hey everyone has to earn a living and look after their families..but I think our Goverment needs to get its priorities straight. People here are out of work, crime is on the rise and these people are treated like nothing more than lowly paid slaves...it is awful on both sides of the fence. It is sickening and disgusting. Rant away Moonie...rant away. You speak for many.,
