War: A Poem

War: A Poem
As I sit all weak and weeping, from my eyes they’re gently seeping
memories wake me from dreams of war
As they ease down my sodden cheek, I don’t dare speak
For I am far too weak, weak from dreams deep in gore
Twas only a dream that made me weak from a past war
Only that and nothing more.
Again I am in Iraq, yet safe at home on my back
back again to this game of which there is no score
In our Humvees we go down the road, supplies is our load
as we drive bombs explode—sounds we’ve all heard before
We’ve heard them once and sure to hear them evermore
Just this and nothing more
There shall never be any retreating; we do without a single bleating
I thought I saw it all but what happened next made my heart sore
Upon this night we got a case, a child was playing in her favorite place
When suddenly the bullets tore through her face, a sight I’m deeply troubled for
During the night, through the dark, hell was brought ashore
All of that and nothing more.
Oh this night all too scary all I wish is to be home and merry
Move us out of this God forsaken war
Battles rage and soon encroaches destiny also approaches
Leaders holler demeaning reproaches, reproaches from behind the door
The ice cold steel fingers of fear scare me through to my core
Simply that and nothing more
Sitting here on the window seat, staring down at my bare feet
Remembering the heavy burden of this finished chore
The things I remember best is the evil done in a terrorist nest
But surely we’ve all passed the test and never have to return to war
But if we do I surely hope this time it’s a bore
Return I vow, “Nevermore.”

Thank you breakfastpop for reading and commenting.
This is great Wes. LOL Have you been reading Poe? Sorry I took so long to get here as I have been so very busy, but I made it and so glad I did because I really like this one son. CC
Do they have ravens in Iraq.? Nice poem, thanks for the share...Semper Fi, Mac..Larry
Wesley I hope that time will heal the wounds that you are enduring and I hope that you are not dealing with PTS the poem touched my heart and I felt the pain of war which I wish we would not have anymore. Well written great work! :)
Ralwus: Bingo, I can't get nothing past you. I read the Raven, I studied the Raven and tried to put a poem together similar in form to the raven. I hope I succeeded. I am glad that you liked this poem as your opinion of these poems matters a lot to me. Thanks for reading.
Maven: They most certainly do have ravens here but I have not had any tapping or rapping on my chamber door, and surely have not had any say to me "nevermore." Thanks for reading.
AEvans: It certainly has been awhile since I've seen you on my pages and am glad that you stopped in to comment on this one. This poem though I built it around Poe's the Raven is 95% true, I never went into a terrorist nest (thats the five percent). The little girl portion is absolutely true and I was haunted by those visions for a long time and it was very hard for me to explain them to friends and family. Time has healed, it has stitched me up but there are times when I still see visions of the little girl. And I duck everytime I hear an explosion while in the states, but not so much here. I am not dealing with PTSD nor ever have been. I merely had to take the time to deal with things on my own terms. Again thank you for reading.
all in the game of war....... must be hard, but i suppose you choose that career.... i don't know how you could do it... keep writing, love your work
The game of war there is no score was used more as a metaphor of no one wins at war. I am really glad that you liked this poem. Even though I stole the style from Poe.
very touchng poem, Wesley! I appreciate your efforts and wish as well for no more war. Well written!
Thank you invictus for visiting, reading, and commenting on my war poem.
Wesley...As I read this...I remembered my dad telling me stories about WW 2. Your poem is at the heart of being a soldier....my dad would have read this...loved it and cried. A wonderful work. Thank you.
