Euro 2008, or the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship will be held in Switzerland and Austria. This event will be from June 7 to June 29 2008, and is the second successful joint bid in the competition's history, following the Euro 2000 hosted by Netherlands and Belgium. The next joint bid will be on 2012 with Poland and Ukraine hosting that event.

16 teams will be participating in this competition, and the host nation's teams of Switzerland and Austria automatically qualified. The 14 remaining teams have been battling it out since August of 2006 and were very determined when they played the qualifying matches. In this tournament, making their first appearance is Poland and Austria. The champion of Euro 2008 will be sent to participate at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa.
Now for the picks for the group matches :
Group A
- Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, Czech Republic
Czech Republic remains the favorite to top Group A together with the Luis Figo-less Portugues team. Czech Republic ranked 6th in the world according to Fifa, made the semifinals of 2004, and finished second in Euro 1996. Portugal has a core of young talents like Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Moutinho, Miguel Veloso, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma, and Manuel Fernandes, that will fill up the void that Figo left, and that is why we are picking Portugal to join Czech Republic. Switzerland and Turkey will play as spoilers as they try to overcome what is to be a daunting task of winning against the Portuguese and the Czechs. They also have a grudge match to settle as both teams figured in a massive player and staff brawl when they met for a World Cup 2006 playoff game in 2005.
Group B
- Croatia, Austria, Poland, Germany
Germany is the team to beat in Group B together with the volatile Croatian team. Germany is one of the 3 most successful national teams at international competitions, won three European championships and three World Cups, and they have Lukas Podolski. Austria is the co-host nation and is the dark horse in this group. The most anticipated match in this group is between the hometown group Austria, and Germany.
Group C
- Netherlands, France, Romania, Italy
This group is called the "Group of Death", and all of the four competing teams here belong to the top 12 in the latest Fifa world rankings. The frontrunner would be the Italian team. Another powerhouse that should make it thru is France. France is still a force to reckon with if only they have a good and healthy lineup throughout the tournament, although they barely made it through the Euro qualifiers after suffered 2 defeats at the hands of Scotland. There's also Netherlands, which makes a this group a titanic one. And add Romania, which is also a good damn team too, so it's the group of death.
Group D
- Russia, Sweden, Spain, Greece
Powerhouse Spain and Greece should advance in the next round. Spain, which is considered by some as football's greatest underachievers, Spain will rely heavily on their team's diligence and numerous talents. The UEFA Euro 2004 champion, Greece, is the favorite in this group.
