So what exactly is Wavefront laser eye surgery?
55Wavefront laser eye surgery is an advanced form of excimer laser technology initially created for viewing objects in space. The aim is to allow you to see clearly in the distance without glasses or contact lenses. Contact lenses can initially seem like a step up to former glasses wearers, but they really aren't much better. People are realizing that they don't have to deal with bothersome contact lenses or tiresome glasses. Wavefront laser eye surgery is so good, that it is not unknown for some patients who have had wavefront laser eye surgery to achieve a higher level of vision than they previously had whilst wearing spectacles or contact lenses.
What is wavefront laser eye surgery?
Wavefront technology allows your surgeon to measure your eyes' unique focusing abilities. The main aim of this type of wavefront laser eye surgery is to produce a smoother surface that corrects your vision. Wavefront is a breakthrough diagnostic technology perfect for people with higher-order irregularities that distinctly affect the quality of their vision. It allows your surgeon to create a unique laser correction program tailored for the surface of your eye. Wavefront technology is actually a recent addition to the field of laser eye surgery. It was originally developed for use in high powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. It now replaces the older standard type of laser vision correction and is the most advanced method of laser eye surgery used today.
How does wavefront laser eye surgery work?
Wavefront LASIK is actually very similar to standard LASIK. Wavefront treatment reshapes the cornea in a way that results in better defined vision, superior visual outcomes and superior night vision. Wavefront analysis (also known as aberrometry) is a technique for measuring the complete refractive status of the eye; it measures the quality of the eyes ability to focus light to a clear and crisp image. Wavefront mapping is the technology that makes custom laser eye surgery possible. The mapping is able to detect and measure optical imperfections 25 times more precisely than standard methods. The machine passes around 8,000 beams of light into different parts of the eye which are then analysed by this machine. These beams or ‘data points’ form a ‘map’ of the surface of the eye. Today, there are many integrated Wavefront guided LASIK systems that first generate a Wavefront map of a patient’s unique optical imperfections, and then send this information to the excimer laser that performs the custom LASIK procedure.
Custom Wavefront LASIK is a treatment type that makes use of an instrument called an aberrometer that measures not only the simple refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, but also measures more complex optical distortions called aberrations. This allows your doctor to assess and personalize your laser vision correction treatment. Sometimes there are irregularities of the eye that can only be spotted and treated with the Wavefront LASIK technology.
Laser eye surgery is a once in a lifetime opportunity: you don't want to settle for average, run-of-the-mill LASIK eye surgery outcomes; you want superb results, Wavefront laser eye surgery will fix your vision permanently and effectively.
