  • Bahrain to tender airport design contractsAME Info26 hours ago

Bahrain Airport Co plans to tender the design contract for two new terminals at the kingdom's international airport within the first quarter of 2010, Passenger Terminal Today website has reported.

I has always been interested in creating my own website. Before I actually did create my own site, I scoured the web to find a company that I may find suitable to assist me with that. I stumbled upon what appeared to be an excellent site. It was set up in an eye-catching manner, flashy pictures arranged in a grid but I couldn't figure out what to do next. I moused over one of the pictures and nothing happened. I moused over another picture and this time some words came up.

I felt like I was trying to solve a puzzle. There was no rhyme or reason to it. I was frustrated. All I wanted to know was how much they charged for designing a web page.

I don't understand why people develop site like that. I believe it is because they don't understand how the web works. The raw truth is people don't care how great your website looks. What they care about is what your website can do for them.

People generally use the web to find information, be entertained, find a solution to a problem, or buy something. Anything that hinders them just causes frustration. People aren't interested in flashy websites. They're interested in websites that can give them what they want.

The key is to be center in on your visitors.

Allow me to give you an example:

Let's say you own a fast-food outlet and you want to put up a website. The question you need to ask is why would people visit your website? Some answers are:

1. They're checking out local fast-food restaurants and want to know what is on the menu and get and idea of what the prices are.

2. They're hungry and looking for a place where they can get some quick food.

3. They're looking for a fast-food restaurant that delivers.

On the main page of the website I would have a catchy headline, menu with prices, an easy-to-find phone number, and a location map. I would put information such as who you are, how long your business has been around for etc, in an "About Us" page.

After you've put up your website you need to try it out. Test it as if you were an actual visitor. Ask yourself, does it give you what you want from a visitor's point of view. If you wanted to know the price of a cheeseburger and fries, could you find out quickly and easily?

Here's another example:

Let's say that after doing some research you discover there's a niche market for people wanting information on picnic baskets - where to find them, how to make them etc. You also discover that there's not that many websites about picnic baskets. So you decide to create a website that's all about picnic baskets. Again, the question is why would people visit your website? The answer is to find information about picnic baskets.

The answer is simple enough, but you'll be surprised at how many people would build such a website with the information on picnic baskets buried in some hard to find place.

On the main page I would have a catchy headline and a listing of articles on picnic baskets with links to other pages on the website. Under each listing I would have a short description to let visitor's know what the article is about. I would also have a search button. That way, if someone was looking for information on how to make a picnic basket they could find the information quickly and easily.

I would no fill up the main page by telling my visitors how great my website is. I definitely wouldn't waste my visitors' time with a flash intro.. They don't care--and neither do I when I encounter that. I immediately look for the 'skip intro' button. Visitors just want to know what

A quick word on flash intros: the vast majority of people skip flash intros. And nearly everybody skips the flash intro the next time they visit the website. Unless you have a strong reason for putting a flash intro on your website, don't. It'll only serve to frustrate your visitors and you will lose potential customers.

Here's an exercise you may like to do. Find two movie directory sites. For each one see how long it takes you to find out who directed the movie "The Departed". Now ask yourself what was the better website. Was it the flashiest looking one or the one that allowed you to get the information you wanted the easiest and fastest?

Don't waste your money and time trying to make your website's appearance be the best. There will always be people with more time, money, and resources to make their website look better than yours. It's enough that your website creates a professional image. Concentrate on being the best website for your visitors. Fulfill the needs of the visitors, not your own.

It's really no different to any other business venture. Those businesses that give people what they want will prosper in the end. Those that don't will fail miserably. Remember, always be center in on your visitors. Focus on giving your visitors what they want.

Great newcapo! So many people build websites for themselves and not for their target audience - somehow a flashy website is seen as a reflection of oneself - and then they wonder why their products don't sell!

So true....especially bad when a site has a flash intro with no option to skip it!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Shalini.

Bravo to you! Wonderful observations and great advice. I hate splash pages, and I hate having to spend time figuring out how to navigate through a site to find what I'm looking for. Oh, and then there's the other thing you mentioned involving, "Welcome to my wonderful site" blah blah blah.

Good job! :)

Great hub newcapo.

Sadly, many business owners are seduced or bullied into paying for websites that are monuments to the skill of the developer, but do absolutely nothing for the client.

The ones I hate the most are where you have to hunt around trying to find the kewly designed, almost invisible links, or trying to decipher what the hell little squiggly link graphics actually mean.

You all make great points and thanks for the kind words. Some of the best sites I've used are the ones with the least amount of graphics and fancy scripts, maybe a few images, but loaded with tools and useful links. Thanks again.

Ah the flash intro... Just imagine what would happen if every time you wanted to shop at the local store you were stopped in your tracks and forced to listen to the same crap time and time again. Bread is in Isle three, soft furnishings are over in the left wing and low viscosity turd remedies can be found in the chemist department. I bet you would stop shopping there after a while. Why don’t some website owners get it!

Eric Graudins profile image

Eric Graudins  says:

@ Peter Hoggan:

They don't get it because they take advice in good faith from people who don't consider - or who have no knowledge of - what is in the best interests of the website owner.

Another common example is the automatic playing of a video or audio file when you get to a website. while this may be OK for the website of a band, it's really bad for  a business site.

This is an absolutely brilliant parody site which accurately reflects the attitude of most of those corporate advertising and marketing agencies.

http://www.huhcorp.com/home.shtml

The delicious irony is that the adsense adverts are for the very type of companies that they are are lampooning.

newcapo profile image

newcapo  says:

That's a riot. I did notice the adsense ads match the parody content.

Here is what it reads when 'strategy' is clicked:

"Our main consulting strategy is to convince clients that we do stuff they can't do themselves, and that we deserve lots of money for it. The best way to do this is to always look good, and always sound like we know something you don't. Because we do.

Are you confused yet? Of course you are. And that's just how we like it. Our marketing professionals are constantly coming up with new ways to make you feel inferior and stupid. Because you are. And we're not. We're new-age, eMoving, marketing consultants.

If you're still not convinced, we'll show you lots of marketing research and consulting cost analysis and global design positioning strategy reports to confuse you and hopefully convince you that we're so knowledgeable you couldn't possibly succeed without us. Because you can't. So don't even try."

Sounds like many companies today. good call

Glad you liked huhcorp.

You'll also like the sister site, DUHCORP - http://www.duhcorp.com/home.shtml

From their "Clientrs are stupid" page:

Clients Are Stupid

It's better if we just clear this up before you hire us. Clients are stupid. All of them. No exceptions. If they weren't stupid, they wouldn't hire us. The only smart thing they ever did was to hire us. So perhaps they're not completely stupid. But they're not not-stupid enough to be considered anything less than stupid. And you're not us. You're not smart. You're the client. That makes you stupid.

============

Absolutely brilliant.

Cheers, Eric G.

Duhcorp is even more extreme the huhcorp , on their 'contact us' link they write:

"Don't worry about contacting us and telling us what you think you need. You don't really know what you need. You're not smart enough to know that. Just drop us a line, and we'll decide what you need."

You know you're not smart, right?

Yes, I know that

I don't understand the question

What do you want?

( Try not to sound too stupid ) "

That is definitely hilarious--

Have a good one!

Hi everyone. I read this yesterday - great hub, great advice. Still picking myself up off the floor from those hilarious website links. Best laugh I've had in ages.

Newcapo - I would add one more design floor to your list and that is those sites where it's impossible to distinguish between content and advertising. If I am looking for info, I want to read good content, not spend the next half hour figuring out what is content and what is advertising. With some sites these days it's just impossible to tell the difference!

newcapo profile image

newcapo  says:

Belinda- I think I know what you mean, you mean another flaw in regards to not being able to tell the difference between advertisements and content...correct?

I agree with that- there is a fine line. I try not to cross this line with my own sites- I have to have some advertising in order to afford hosting, etc....but if they are overused or poorly placed, the adverts can get overwhelming, especially popups/popunders, etc.....

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
