Weight Loss in Society

You’ve probably heard of testimonies of how people battling obesity suffer mentally, emotionally, and physically. Oftentimes, these people are socially withdrawn. In effect, they tend to become alone and lonely. They also have to deal with the various illnesses that obesity caused them. Most have hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems. It is not surprising why people who are suffering from obesity are oftentimes depressed.

You cannot fault them entirely on their tendencies to eat a lot or the fact that they do not exercise. Studies show that most people who found themselves alarmingly overweight or obese have turned to food to compensate for something lacking in their lives. There are people who are generally called emotional eaters. These people eat to feel good. Most of the time, they don’t feel good because of a stressful relationship, bad marriage, or demanding job, and they tend to eat more and more.

Being overweight or obese is not funny. It is a danger to a person’s psyche and health. Most people could generally lose weight through proper diet and exercise, but there are those who have to resort to weight loss surgery to save their lives.

Introduction to Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery is a medical procedure intended to remove accumulated and excess fats in a person’s body. It is otherwise known as bariatric surgery. A type of bariatric surgery is the mini-gastric bypass which is quite simple and relatively inexpensive. Mini-gastric bypass has been extensively done and has been proven quite effective.

Bariatric surgery is primarily designed to enable the patient to reduce his food intake. Patients are instructed to eat less and slowly. They are also instructed to refrain from drinking a lot of fluids in order to maximize the results of the weight loss surgery.

The Duodenal Switch Procedure

The duodenal switch procedure is a type of weight loss surgery. The duodenal switch surgery is high commended for its allowing patients to lose and maintain weight loss for longer than other weight loss procedures. The surgery includes partial gastrectomy. With this procedure, the capacity of the stomach is greatly reduced. However, its functionality is not greatly affected. This is tremendously different from other weight loss surgeries wherein the stomach’s anatomic structure is significantly changed. Duodenal switch procedure barely touches the pyloric valve, allowing normal functionality. This eliminates significant risks of the patient developing complications like marginal ulcers, blockages, dumping syndrome and stoma closures.

The duodenum switch procedure allows for normal functionality of digestion and food absorption. The procedure retains unscathed a portion of the duodenum. The stomach is still then able to digest and absorb food normally before the food enters into the small intestine. The patient then absorbs more minerals, nutrients and vitamins through the duodenum switch procedure than he would if he opted for other forms of weight loss procedure.

Preparing Yourself for Weight Loss Surgery

Again, weight loss surgery is not something that you can easily trifle with. It is literally going under the knife, and somehow, you’d come out from it anatomically changed. Going through this is a serious matter and would require careful consideration before you opt to have a surgery. It is especially important to inquire from your doctor about your options and the kinds of weight loss surgeries available to you. Weight loss surgery is not a cosmetic surgery where your fats get suctioned. There is a remarkably high risk that there could be complications, so make sure that you know and weigh all your options.

Thank you for the hub on weight loss surgery. We recently posted one as well...and after delving pretty heavily into the subject, our research showed that LAGB (gastric banding) is the only weight loss surgery that can stake a legitimate claim to being both *safe* and *effective*. The most important aspect of weight loss surgery is aftercare...because without it, no surgery will be successful.
