what are the best collecting hobby for children (not expensive, if possible for free).
55It seems to be the most mundane of collections, but a rock collection is something that can be fun and creative (not to mention free!) for children. When I was younger, I used to pick up "pretty" rocks from the ground as I walked home from school and take them home with me. I arranged all of my findings in a basket on my dresser, putting the best finds on top. Through various "tourist-y" trips with my parents and grandparents, I also found inexpensive pieces to add to my collection, such as polished quartz, obsidian, and turquoise. It is a great collection to have when traveling, as you can pick up pieces from far-away places and keep them as mementos forever! When we go to the beach, I like to find sea glass to add to the collection because the colors are so varied and they look beautiful displayed in a glass candle holder. I mix in pretty shells that I find on the beach as well.
It's a great hobby for kids because it gives them a chance to experience nature and also to build up a collection of pieces from all over the city, state, country, or even world! It's fun to organize the pieces based on color, shape, size, etc. and can keep kids occupied for hours.

Leaves are collectable, but will quickly die without the right care. I once did a science project and collected different leaves and put them in a photo album that had protective sheets. I was in the sixth grade or so. Anyway, fifteen years later they were still there. The only problem with them was that I didn't dry them out first, so the water in the leaves leaked onto the pages they were on. Collect them, dry them and save them. If you're in for a bit of a challenge, list the common and scientific names for each leaf on each page.
