What is Indie Music?

Exactly what are they talking about when they say 'indie music?'

Lately, the term 'indie music' has been floating around the internet more and more, as more and more new indie music artists start to emerge. But exactly what is indie music? Recently I wrote an article about the 'indie music' term and how I was shocked to discover that more people search for the term 'indie music' than for 'independent music.'

The reason this shocked me was because a few years ago I had owned a website that focused on promoting indie r&b, but I was constantly questioned about what is indie music, and what does the term 'indie' refer to.

Now a few years later, the term is known all over the world, but there are still some who ask and wonder why is 'indie' the short word for 'indpendent.'

Well honestly, I don't have to get into an english lesson, because it is quite obvious that it fits. It's kind of like the word "ain't" wasn't considered a real word, but it just fits, and after all of these years of people saying that it wasn't a word, it finally ended up in the new version of the dictionary.

So whether indie is truly a form of indpendent according to the english language or not, is beyond my interest, but the word does stick, and has caught on to people all over the world.

The real meaning however, is simple; indie music, or independent music, is music that does not depend on a corporate run company that controls and governs the creator and the music. It's like the equivalent of being self-employed, but as a music artist. Artists who sign to major record companies become employee, and are thus under contract and technically, 'owned' by the label.

This can technically be the case with artists who sign to indpendent record labels as well, but the indie labels still are not governed by the same corporate stiff rules as the 4 major record companies.

Whatever road that a new music artist decides to take is truly their choice, but in today's market, it seems that it is better to stay and indie artist and create your own brand, and make yourself rich and less dependent, rather than spending you talents and doing 'ok' while making the owners of the major labels filthy.
