I want to write, but don't know what to write about

I, like most of you hubbers, have been a "writer" ever since I could push a pencil. I've mostly written poetry, but I've taken a couple of writing classes (high school), and aced College English. I've been complimented more times than I can remember, about my "talent". I was teacher's pet in College English. I was praised repeatedly by my Junior High and High School English teachers (and that was a rarity because I was not an "A" student and I certainly didn't care what most of my teachers thought). I've had family, friends, two different judges, and my own attorney, give many kudos for my writing ability. Let me just say that I've been an at-home-mom for 12 years and totally out of the workforce. I am far from a professional or even college-educated (took a couple of college courses), but intelligent nonetheless. My divorce attorney (thank God I never had to get divorced) actually told me, after I sent him 72 hand-written pages of testimony/affadavits for an upcoming court date, that he would actually have to "dumb it down", referring to my affadavit that would be sent to the court. He said the judge would not believe that I wrote it. My attorney actually thought that the judge would think HE (the attorney), wrote the affadavits!! Isn't that crazy?

I actually believe in myself as a writer (for the most part). I didn't believe the compliments for many years. Please know this; I know that I am far from a literary genius. I can see what my talents are. But I do believe that I have the writing "gene", and I should be writing for a living.

I've been struggling with myself, for several years, over what I can do for a living, to help support my three children (with my husband of 12 years). I want my children to have more, I want to have more, I want my husband to have more. But here's the kicker, I have several anxiety disorders and a social phobia. Oddly I was diagnosed by two different docs, from different Centers, at the same time. Luckily I do not suffer any worse fate, as my mother and sister who live with bipolar. But a social phobia does not allow a person to comfortably socialize and go out into the world as many people do on a normal basis. I can't just go out and get a job because that's my "duty". It doesn't work that way. My brain tells me that "life will go on whether I play along or not, I can't handle dealing with people right now". So I do not.

In my search for the "perfect" career, I remembered that I do have a writing talent. But what can I do with it? What do I write about? I was not a good student, I do not have one subject (that I can think of) that I could write about from beginning to end, without resource. I feel stupid. I feel like I have nothing to provide to the world, that only I could provide. I don't feel the individuality that I should feel as a writer. In my opinion.

So, what does a person write about when they're out of ideas? How do you learn and re-teach without plagiarism? How can I share my talent (whether it be for money or not) if I don't know what to write about?

I love to write and I can't imagine life without writing, but poetry writing is not enough for me. I need more. I feel like I need to write a book, which I will do very soon (or begin to). But until then, please other writers out there, I could use your help on this subject!

There are so many of you hubbers out there that I idolize and look up to. I hope to be one of you someday. I want to write, and I want to help others, I'm just needing a little friendly push in the right direction!

Thanks to Hub Pages and all of you Hubbers! Keep on writin':)

Miss Jamie D... Nice Hub. What I find is when I write about topics I am familar with and interested in.. the writing flows. When I try to force a topic- I get writer's block. It looks like you're a mom from your picture- so write about that- as an example. Good luck!!

Hmmm...I'm having a bit of writer's block myself. I always read and it helps me get over it. I don't know if that works for you. In the meantime, I'd love to see some of that poetry you were talking about :) I hope you'll post it. You definitely have a talent for writing and I love reading poems from talented writers.

Babygirl, everybody here is looking for that tiny token of approval that confirms that what they have to say actually is important. While I will gladly give you that token, I think you should remember that everyone is in the same boat as you. They all sit down, think about what they're going to write, erase it, think about how to write it better, publish it, and then wait for that coveted approval. This place reminds me of a ghetto gas station bathroom wall, but instead of "for a good time call..." it reads, "for a good time read how I feel about so-and-so". That being said, when you write your message on the bathroom wall, ignore all the other perverts!

You've got plenty to write about! Not even considering the mom factor! I think the key is balance. That goes for anything and everything in life. Balance your individuality with an absence of identity and then write. For example, let's say you wrote about your social phobia or your anxiety. With all due respect, I think that's a money topic. Everybody has some degree of it, so instead of writing about it as your problem, write about it as your problem that is everyone's too! Explain the validity of it! Title it "I'm not crazy you are" or some shit like that! I might just be talking nonsense, but I hope you catch my drift.

Whatever you put out, I'll start checkin them out, and I'm not tryin to sound snobby, but I don't read nobody's shit in here! But since you showed me love in a room full of frauds, you can do no wrong by me babygirl! New hub comin soon, its your boy, grillin beans, all day everyday!

Hi, MissJamieD. I've been a newspaper writer all my life. Fortunately, I've never had any difficulty finding things to write about because I get dozens of ideas every day by reading newspapers or books and by listening to radio and watching television. I don't know if it will work for you, but I am inspired to write whenever I feel a visceral reaction to something I've seen or read. For instance, I've written a few columns about the arrest and trial of O.J. Simpson a decade ago because I was incensed that he was being unfairly judged by many people largely because of prejudice, and those same people refused to accept the judgment of the jury. I think you would find plenty to write about if you simply write whatever you feel strongly about -- whether it's your relationships, your faith, your health, your political or social concerns or something you particularly like or dislike. You may find the greater difficulty is to choose from the many interests you have. Good luck, and keep writing!

William--I've learned that you're very right about what you've said here. I've continued to write about the things I'm passionate about, and my fan base has soared (from what it was anyway). Thanks so much for reading, I appreciate your advice:)

Best thing to do is not to beat yourself to write, but to back off a little. Go out and experience something. Observe. You're bound to see something that roasts your toes enough to want to write about!

I have this book at home that has examples of different kinds of essays - argument, comparison and contrast, narrative, whatever. I used to get a lot of mileage out of a book like that. I'd pick an essay type and then find a subject to fit the type. That was fun.

Am I a geek?

Tom--*giggling* no you're not a geek. And if you are, then so am I and so be it:) I have some creative writing exercises on my desk right now. I have learned some things about this already, just since posting this hub...you guys here at HP are life savers I'm telling you:) I love the essay idea, it may help me in starting to write short stories....as always, thank you so much for reading and for the advice. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for you and a couple handfuls of others here. Hugs
