what to do BEFORE you join a gym.

Assuming that are physically able to use the gym equipment, there are few things to consider before joining a gym. There are usually several possible gym options in an area, especially if you are near a city. Look in the phone book for gyms, search online, and then make a few phone calls. Ask things like "Do you have a new member rate? Do you run any yearly specials and when? Are there any other services a gym membership would connect you with? What are the hours? Do you pay monthly? Yearly? etc"

Think about what kind of gym you are looking for? Are you looking for a hip, young crowd? An older quieter crowd? An upbeat, aerobic program? Or more mediative yoga-like atmosphere? Some gyms have a mix, so it's important to visit the gym to see. Most gyms offer a tour -- be sure to go when you think you would hit the gym normally. Gym crowds usually differ depending on the time, like over the lunch break you get your professional crowd, but 8:00 at night there are a bunch of college students. Get a feel for who you'll be attending the gym with, because the gym crowd can make a difference.

Look around at the walls in the gym -- does the staff put up motivational posters or information? Do they highlight their members? Do they provide monthly or regularly updated tips and techniques? Make sure you look at the equipment, does it seem well maintained?

Also, consider the location of the gym. I once read that the best gym is the one closest to you, and there is some validity to that statement. If you have to drive 20 minutes one way every morning or every night (especially with gas prices!), you might lose motivation. However, it is is just 5 minutes walking, you are much more apt to go. Maybe find a gym that is in between your work and home. Most gyms have shower facilities so you could go before work and get ready at the gym.

At the gym I attend, they have educated trainers that design a program for you when you join, and then you can update it as often as you want (for a $10 fee) to hit new areas or meet new goals. This is great and can put spark back into your routine when you are feeling ho-hum about the gym.

Exercise is addictive. Joining a gym is one of the best things I ever did. I love working out and seeing how much stronger I am getting. Just make sure the gym is going to work for your goals and go for it!
