With Valentine's Day right around the corner, you might be trying to figure out what that perfect gift is. Of course, the perfect gift for one person may be the worst gift for another. So, the key here is to make sure you pay attention to your sweetie before making that Valentine's Day purchase.

The first thing you need to listen for is blatant hints. Sometimes a woman will be less than subtle with her hints. If she is constantly talking about the new spa downtown and how badly she needs a massage, take the hint – set up a massage or, even better, a full-day of pampering for her. If you are unsure of what day would work best for her, either get a gift certificate that will cover the entire day, or present her with the gift in a card and then sit down with her and YOU call to make the arrangements while she is there with you. That way, you are still setting everything up, but she has say. This line of thinking also works for hints like, "I am so interested in trying that new restaurant downtown." Make the reservations. (By the way, remember, it is Valentine's Day, so make the reservations now.)

Now, if you honey is a bit more subtle or if she is not really looking for anything in particular, you REALLY need to pay attention. In these cases, a woman usually wants to know that her partner cares for her and truly knows her. If you know that she is constantly complaining that she cannot seem to find the time to give her home the deep cleaning that she thinks it needs, then a perfect present would be hiring a housekeeper for her AND taking her someplace special to enjoy her free time. This could be as simple as a picnic at the park, a shopping trip (yes, you have to hold all of the bags and PATIENTLY accompany her from store to store), the latest "chick flick" that she is dying to see, or even a day hiking. Again, it depends on what SHE is into. (HINT: Don't buy her tickets to a sporting event or concert, unless it is something that she REALLY enjoys.)

Finally, think beyond the standard flowers and chocolates (unless of course, she really wants those). By being original, you show her not only that you didn't pick up something last minute, but you also let her know that she is special to you and completely worth the extra thought and effort. And, knowing that, you will make her Valentine's Day one to remember.
