when there are no gods to love
60oh Iðunn, what are you to do
when you have no gods to love
no one to adore
no one to live for
a mother without a god child
when your life is defined
by other people's genius
nurturing their sparks
lighting their darkness
where are you when
they suddenly leave the room
all that eternal life wasted
your golden apples dripping
immortality...
and no one to offer them to
who mourns the keeper of the gods
the way you mourn the missing gods
the demi-gods, the geniuses
who leap off your pedestal
and fall back into obscurity
is there no-one who wants
to step into that unused spotlight
to buff themsevles up and glow
to bite the apple of sustenance
and shine for the world to see?
how do you nurture those who'd rather die
who leave you alone in your maternal glory
bereft like mary at the foot of the cross

Dedication
This name was chosen for me by another and yet in so many ways I identify with this goddess, year later and unexpectedly. I suspect strongly I see Mary in all great women though, Mary in all good mothers and my love for her swells under the weight of her gift of giving and her gift of suffering well.
Who was Iðunn?
I have a Hub that goes into detail on the background of the Norse goddess Iðunn here: Idunn and the Real Me
And another poem relating to a happier Iðunn, with the requisite demi-god to worship and nurture, here: Iðunn and Bragi

ah, thank you gypsy. it was just there suddenly and who am I to argue with the Muse, eh? it's something I'm working out, some old dream, but I liked the way this part of it came out also.
Your poetic gift is still there :-)
yes, but seemingly only when I am in sulking mode. I don't know why I don't write good poems when I'm happier, but I cede that I don't. thank you so much for stopping in to read. I'm glad you liked this one... it sort of burst out of me when I wasn't expecting it. I surprised myself.
The poetry is stunning and I may add your existence is to satisfy us with more poems.
I am deeply honoured. Thank you so very much for stopping in. I read your poetry often, even re-reading your work frequently and I feel anything I write pales in comparison, so it is with great pride I welcome your comments.
