I like to try all adrenaline-filled trips like whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, paragliding, caving and other extreme sports.  So far, I had tried only whitewater rafting.

What is whitewater rafting?

According to Wikipedia, rafting or whitewater rafting is a challenging recreational activity using an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other bodies of water.  This is usually done on whitewater or different degrees of rough water, in order to thrill and excite the raft passengers.  The development of this activity as a leisure sport has become popular since the mid-1970s.

Rapid Classifications:

Class I — easy, no obstacles, small ripples, slow current

Class II — Moderate, occasional obstacles, medium current with waves

Class III — Difficult, longer rapids with strong, irregular currents

Class IV — Very Difficult, steeper, longer with numerous obstacles

Class V — Extremely Difficult, has large vertical drops, strong hydraulics, very swift, irregular currents in heavily obstructed channels

Class VI — Nearly Impossible and Very Dangerous.  For teams of experts only, after close study and with all precautions taken.

My Experience:

My whitewater rafting experience happens in one of the beautiful rivers of the Philippines, Cagayan de Oro river which is a 6-hour run, 25 rapids, class II – IV. The experience was great. It was like a roller coaster ride, only in waters. Maneuvering the rapids with the help of a guide, the exhilarating rush is like no other feeling in the world. Non-stop rapid action, which makes my head spinning and my heart thumping. It was really the most fun I had with something inflatable.

Before trying other extreme sports, I want to try another whitewater rafting ride but this time on a higher level with class V rapids. I ask some of my friends who are whitewater rafting enthusiasts and it so happened that my friend in New Jersey suggested to me to try Maine whitewater rafting.

Maine Whitewater Rafting:

Therefore, I look in the internet and found out that Maine has three rivers, Kennebec, Dead and PenobscotRivers. The three rivers are famous for their distinctive beauty and truly exceptional white water.

1.) Maine Whitewater Rafting - Kennebec River

This river begins at Harris Stationon Indian Pond and flows through the Kennebec Gorge ending at The Forks. Class II-V Rapids.

2.) Maine Whitewater Rafting - Dead River

This river offers the longest stretch of continuous whitewater in the East. The trip begins at Grand Falls and runs through Class IV and V whitewater ending at The Forks.

3.) Maine Whitewater Rafting - Penobscot River

This river contains numerous powerful class III, IV, and V rapids.

Many people flock to Maine, from spring through fall, because of its largest and fastest rapids in the world.

By the way, most people think white water rafting is only for experienced water sports enthusiasts, it is actually available for the whole family to enjoy.

At least now, I know where to spend my next vacation trip with my wife, in Maine…to experience the Maine whitewater rafting.
