When you first purchased your computer, it seemed to run so well. Your system would boot up smoothly and run without a hitch. However, as time progresses, you must have noticed somewhat of a decline in the performance of your PC. This can be for many reasons. Here, let us discuss some of the possible causes that are responsible for the slowdown that your PC is experiencing.

  1. Filling up of hard disk – When your hard disk is almost empty, your PC will always boot up faster. This is because, except the operating system, there won’t be many files to load in the RAM. However, as you go on adding new applications and saving lots of files in your hard disk, there will be more and more files to load at boot time. This will make your PC run a lot slower. You can remedy the situation by either getting a new hard disk for extra storage space, or by deleting some of your unused files.
  2. Fragmented files – As you store and delete files, the files stored in your hard disk get fragmented. These fragmented files cannot be accessed easily by the operating system, consequently affecting the performance of your PC in an adverse manner. In order to remedy that, run Disk Defragmenter at least once a week. This is a must if you regularly create and delete files.
  3. Errors in Windows® registry – As you create and delete files on a regular basis, Windows® Registry often develops one or more errors. These errors in the Windows® Registry don’t always prevent the PC from booting up. Minor errors may simply slow the PC down a bit. Over time, as more and more errors occur, your PC may be slowed down to a crawl. In order to prevent this from happening, run a good registry fixing utility at regular intervals to fix these errors.
  4. Errors in hard disk – You hard disk may also develop errors as time goes on. Tiny bad sectors can develop on the surface of the disk, causing major slowdowns in performance. The most dangerous thing is that you may not consider this possibility at all when troubleshooting to find out the reason for the slowdown of your PC. In order to combat this silent assassin, run a good disk-checking utility at least once a month. Windows® Chkdsk utility is not a bad option.

These can be the causes of your computer running slower with every passing day. Keep a tab on the health of your PC and optimize it frequently by following the above guidelines, in order to keep it running smoothly for a long time to come.
