The MLM world has relived a bad reputation in the last few years. Many people think it is full of pyramid schemes and scam artists. When people hear the words MLM or network marketing they immediately assume it's an unethical business or even illegal. But what is MLM really? It's sometimes known as multi level marketing, affiliate marketing or network marketing.
The idea behind MLM is that it rewards the seller. Not only for the direct selling of the product or system but for the recruitment of other multi level marketers. It is also directing attention or traffic towards the parent company.
So why has MLM developed such a bad reputation in the last few years. A lot of this is due in part to the Internet. The Internet has been an amazing venue for MLMers to use to advertise their business and produce large profits, but there are down sides to that as well. The Internet is still a pretty new social meeting place. The amount of information offered by the Internet world is unprecedented. Because the Internet is as anonymous as people want it to be, this leaves a huge door open for scam artists and those who preach their “get rich quick” schemes. We are still trying to learn how to regulate the business side of this virtual world we have now.
So, is MLM illegal? Absolutely not. Multi Level Marketing operates the same way as any other business franchise out there, such as if you owned a McDonalds, Taco Bell or even a Wal-Mart. The illegal activity tends to come in to play just because of the few bad apples that are out there running pyramid schemes and fronting themselves as a Multi Level Marketing company. Some of the biggest health and wellness companies in the world are Multi Level Marketing companies. They would not have survived for over 40-50 years if they were illegal.
If an MLM company is operating ethically and legally then there are real legitimate business opportunities for those who want to start their own business. The Internet has opened up an even bigger world for those people also. Not having to deal with the obstacles that could have gotten in their way maybe even just 5-10 years ago. Many people at that time had to build their multi level marketing business by having home parties or calling up every person they have ever known. The Internet has opened up an entirely new door for many curious people.
When you are looking for an MLM opportunity just be sure and be cautious of who you decide to partner with. Until there are regulations in the Internet business marketing area it is really on you to do your own research. Trust your instincts and be very cautious of who you do partner up with. You may have to try a few different opportunities before you find that one that fits you.
So Why MLM? A lot of people choose the Multi Level Marketing world because they are able to have the time and financial freedom that owning your own business provides without a huge start up fee. With the Internet you can now tap in to great mentors who can guide you through the Internet side of Multi Level Marketing and can now accomplish things that maybe seemed next to impossible 10 years ago. With prospects sitting in front of your keyboard MLM has become a very successful industry. Even in economic downturns such as what we are in now the multi level marketing industry continues to grow. Some experts feel that happens because when employees see instability in their jobs or careers they have had for years they tend to feel it is time to put their financial security in their own hands instead of an employers.
The possibility of making real money in the MLM industry does exist, you just need to know how to find the right place. Start by doing your homework. Check out whatever you can on the parent company, see what the better business bureau has to say about them, how long they have been in business and find a mentor. The mentor you choose should be someone you can get a in touch with when you call or email them. Look for their testimonials. Do they stick with something or take the money and run? If you follow these few simple steps you may find out why MLM just may be right for you.
