Commodore Bainimarama has dismissed the government - he has sacked everybody involved in the administration.They will receive a months salary in lieu of notice.
A 77 year old army doctor has been appointed temporary prime minister. A new administration has been appointed by the military.Being a soldier he claims he had no option but to accept his appointment. He accepts his appointment is illegal, but reiterated comments concerning the accusation that the Fijian Government was corrupt and had to be dismissed. He also understands that he could face prosecution in the future, but being 77 years old is not too worried about such action.
New Zealand has banned all members of the Fijian military from entering the country, and will deport any members and their families from remaining if they are in the country already. Members of sports teams, except the Fijian Sevens Rugby team which will participate in an intenational IRB tournament early next year in Wellington, will not be allowed entry.
Fiji is expected to be dismissed from the Commonwealth by the end of the week.
Britain, Australia and New Zealand have threatened to withdraw millions of dollars worth of aid to Fiji. Fiji has already told New Zealand to butt out of its affairs. Fji has a lot more to lose than just the support from one of its closest friends in New Zealand.
